T42p Q1U issues - HDD problem?

#1 Post by jeroenp » Fri Dec 31, 2004 7:58 am

Just received a T42p Q1U and I'm having HDD issues with it.
Sind I'll be leaving the US back to Amsterdam in less than a week, what is the fastest way to get the problem below resolved?

I keep getting errors on the disk when installing the T42p.
The disk seems to behave irregularly.
Each time I run CHKDSK, I get different results.
Please find attached a couple of captures of CHKDSK outputs.

I have done these things:
1- out-of-the-box install
This ran fine, until (after installing office, visual studio, etc), I got
"delayed write errors" in the $MFT and $BITMAP area

2- booted to the 'rescue partition', reinstalled the thing from scratch
Same issues when installing loads of stuff.

3- booted to the 'rescue partition', reinstalled the thing from scratch,
then ran CHKDSK as soon as possible.
Now CHKDSK reports errors, and when I try 'CHKDSK /F', it cannot find
those errors any more when CHKDSK runs at boot time, but different errors
appear when I run CHKDSK from within Windows itself.

4- booted to the 'rescue partition', reinstalled the thing from scratch,
then installed the 'Command Console' as soon as possible.
On the command-console, CHKDSK finds the same irregular errors as within
Windows itself.

5- performed -4-, disabled Norton Antivirus and other preloaded software
that might interfere with HDD activity: same results.

6- performed a PC Doctor scan - it cannot find anything in the short test,
the long test is still running.

I have worked through this almost all night to get this reproduced, and I
must say I'm disappointed: this is not what I expected from a brand new
top of the line T42p.

Some output with successive CHKDSK tries during step -5- (drive E: is a USB stick for temporary storage, C: is the PRELOAD IBM partition):

The PC Doctor extended test could not find anything wrong.
I suspect the preload partition is not OK, and the 'access IBM partition' does not copy the files to it correctly when performing a system rescue.

What other options do I have?
Currently I'm trying to extract the recovery disks and getting hold of a bunch of blank CD-R media to see if I can get a bootable XP installation CD.

Any other ideas?

Call IBM Service and tell them you need a new hard disk and recovery CDs!

Sounds good to me, let IBM in US take care of it... they usually offer next day shipping on those items.

I have ran PC-Doctor and Drive Fitness Test on the HDD - both indicate the HDD is OK.

Could it be that the IBM PRELOAD is broken? It is a relatively new one (with XP SP2 integrated into it).

I have downloaded a prestine Win XP Pro ISO VLK image from MSDN with SP2 integrated, and I'm downloading all the IBM TP42p drivers from the ftp-site right now.

Will play with that later and let you guys now.

I dunno...the "delayed write" errors you are getting makes me think "bad hard drive." Go to the Hitachi Global Storage Technologies web site at http://www.hgst.com/ and download their Drive Fitness Test software. It should be able to tell you if something is wrong with the drive.

I already did. Did the full read-test, and it didn't come up with any error. SMART didn't tell me about a problem either.
I'm reluctant to do a full read-write test (as it will kill the recovery partition).

I'm not clear what errors you're getting when checking the C: drive (not the pre-desktop area), but there is a bug in which chkdsk will say after stage 3:

Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F...

Running chkdsk /f on the next boot will not solve the problem.

This is a bug. Search for it in Google. I looked it up awhile ago, and it really is just a harmless but unfixed bug.

Solved - at least partially.

Seems my preload was hosed. Not sure if I was the cause or that the initial preload was bad.

Installing with a vanilla XP + SP2 + IBM drivers now works great.

Case closed.

One other thing...turn the system over, check to see if the hard drive retaining screw is in place. If it is not...the drive can work its way out over time...and result in random errors...

That was one of the first things I checked. It was there, so the HDD had no chance to move itself out.

But thanks for the tip!
