T41P AC Adapter High pitch noise
T41P AC Adapter High pitch noise
Hi,
I have noticed that my AC Adapter has a very high pitch noise when connected to electricity. The noise gets slightly lower when I connect the AC adapter to my T41P but still it is there.
I tried my brand new spare AC Adapter and it makes the same noise.
Is it normal?
My AC Adapter for 770Z doesn’t make any noise!
Anyone else has noticed this?
Thanks
Sepehr

Hello,
I just noticed, I have got the same problem.
The noise is louder in the adapter if not connected to Thinkpad (T41p). Connecting it to the T41p makes the noice in the AC lower but makes the same kind of noice at the adapter plug in at the T41p.
So far I thought that is normal, but obviously it is not??

What is the FRU number on the AC adapter? It should be on the sticker on the back of the unit.
I had an AC adapter with a FRU number starting with 02K that made a high pitched noise when plugged in. My 08K209 is silent.

I've noticed this kind of thing before with several AC adaptors, for computers and other equipment. My T30 AC adaptor does this sometimes, but not all the time. The adaptor I had with my 770x (years ago!) did it a lot.
Try getting a new one from IBM (ok, another new one since you reported the problem with both that you have). If #3 still makes the noise, learn to live with it...

I had this happen to a psu in a Toshiba laptop i had, and it failed eventually. I have also seen this happen to older psu in tvs, monitors, and other electronic equipment. I wouldnt think it hurt your laptop unless you were running with the battery removed. I would see if you can get it replaced, also tell them that the brick is getting hot too. Mine got really hot before it failed.

The 08K8205 was what originally came with my T40. That one made pulsing electrical noises that sounded like birds. The noise occured when the T40 was either on or off.
One of my friends has a T23 with FRU 02K (can't remember last 3 characters) AC adapter that is compatible with the T40. I asked IBM to send me one of those and it worked for awhile, except it made a high pitched whine when the ThinkPad was off.
Finally IBM sent me the 08K8209 and my AC adapter noise problems went away.

I think it's "normal", with my T41, I have the same issue, I bought a new power supply and it makes noise (same manufacturer).
When the laptop was shutdown, the noise was higther.
With my Dell D800, the psu makes noise but less than the IBM psu.
It's seems to be a link between noise en ground plug:

What are you people smoking?
Everything electrical makes noise - your ability to perceive it is based on two criteria 1: The sensitivity of your ears and/or 2: The quality of the components used to make the item.
If the noise is VERY noticable then obviously try to get the unit changed, but I'm more afraid that this will develop into a "Is your power brick made in Outer Manchuria" - remember the keyboard posts? Isn't there more to life...?

A couple of months ago, I bought a T42, and my girlfriend bought a T40. Both of the power supplies made very hearable high-pitch noises when not charging (when the computer is in the room where you sleep, it is extremely annoying).
I sent both power supplies in, and instead got 2 that made so little noise that you can't hear it unless you put your ear within 20cm of the supply. So in my experience, it does pay to get the power supply swapped.

I'm not smoking anything Ian are you? Perhaps, an obnoxious gas with residual effect!
All I asked was that my 770Z AC Adapter does not make any noise but my two AC Adapter for T41P does. If this post offends your forum intellect so be it.
Now for the people who were not offended by my original post. I had IBM technician in my office today and he thinks they are not functioning correctly. So, he is going to replace both of them.
I do not know if he was smoking anything or not but I'm happy to send his blood sample to our new forum cop.

ian, this problem is real and very different than the keyboard issue. The two 08K8205 adapters that I owned were all bad and made noise that was audible to almost everyone I showed it to. And no, they weren't smoking anything.

Ian, I'm STILL smoking!
Anyway, a truce for all concerned. This IS a friendly forum, and I/we deeply appreciate the contributions from all. It's easy on a forum like this for someone to misunderstand/get offended. But let's all "kiss and make up" and move on.
As the official thinkpads.com Ambassador (Bill just hasn't gotten around to adding the official title to my Avatar), I declare this problem solved!
