Resolution and USB problems on T42

#1 Post by rossh » Mon Sep 08, 2008 4:47 pm

Hi guys,

I have just done a few upgrades on my T42 (model 2723) including new 250Gb HD, DVD burner, plus I have replaced a broken keyboard, palm rest and replaced my LCD panel. I reloaded windows and tried to load all the drivers I need, everything seems to work. I now have 2 problems:

Firstly, I cant seem to get any higher resolution than 1024 x 768. This maybe what it works best at but on my previous one I had it set higher (I prefer it this way, I do a lot of photo editing and it means that photoshops boxes don't take up the whole screen). I'm using the Radion 9600 driver (which I'm sure I was before) but it wont let me set the res any higher. Anyone got any ideas?

Secondly, and this is an older problem, when I plug in any USB device it tells my that the device can run faster if it was connected to a hi-speed USB 2.0 port. This is a real pain when uploading 4 gigs of pictures!!

Any help would be very much appreciated and I'd buy the person a beer if we ever met!!
Cheers
Ross

Can't answer your question about the USB ports, but I'll give the first one a shot.

When you replaced your LCD did you get one that has a resolution higher than XGA (1024 x 768)? If you have an XGA LCD, you won't be able to go to a higher resolution (internally) without getting suitable LCD.

About the only definite way to tell what your "new" LCD panel is would be to open up the lid and read the part number (FRU) off of the display. However, you might not have to...

The 14.1" display came in either XGA (1024 x 768) or SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) resolutions. It sounds like you had an SXGA+ but replaced it (along with the ribbon cable) with an XGA version. Just having a T42 label on it doesn't really mean anything in this regard. You might be able to tell what the display is without taking anything apart if there's an FRU on the end of the LCD ribbon cable. If you have a 91P6786 cable, then that's an XGA display. If it's a 91P6787 cable, then that goes with an SXGA+ display.

If you look on the bottom of the system, there should be a seven character TYPE code starting with 2723 and having a "-" and three more characters. Plug that into this page:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OME-LENOVO

in the "Product Number" field and see what the original specs are. If you do not already have a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual, this document has information about your system which might be useful:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46464

As far as your USB problem, I believe that there's a fairly common problem with the laptop's USB 2.0 interface downgrading to 1.1 speeds. Search the forums here for additional information.

edit: Sorry for the lateness of this post... in the middle of composing it I was called away from my desk...

Cheers for that rkawakami, when you say the FRU number, either 91P6786 or 91P6787, is this number is the middle of a long number on the ribbon?

I have been looking at a screen where the guy says its a SXGA, he gave me the following number: 11s11p835z1z8nb288804

From this and looking on the IBM site I think the FRU is 11P8352 (i know it says z but i'm guessing this is wrong) which I think makes it a XGA.

Is this correct?

It appears that you did get the wrong screen which is an easy but expensive fix.
For the USB problem, assuming the board is OK and assuming you are running Windows XP.
Open up "Device Manager" by way of System in Control Panel. Find the USB device, which may have an ! next to it.
Double click the USB and click on update driver. Let windows connect to the Internet for the driver and you should be good to go.
