"long fan" - what does this mean?

#1 Post by DaveG11th » Tue Sep 09, 2008 7:23 am

Just bought a T42 prior to knowing about the GPU issue. :banghead:

So, of course, I've been reading GPU failure threads -- several advise the use of the 'long fan.'

What is this? A fan assembly that's physically longer than a standard one? Or a fan setting in software that makes the fan run longer than default?

(Don't have the unit yet... it's being dragged by oxcart across the US by UPS... so all I know is T42, 1.7GHz, 1GB RAM, 14.1 XGA / ATI 7500 and 'looks and runs great' per trustworthy seller. Warranty expires 12/6/2008, suggesting Oct-Dec. 2005 assembly.)

Thanks,
Dave

welcome to the forum. :)

as name suggests, the long fan is longer. the heatsink and heat pipes extend to cover and cool the gpu. i don't have a picture at hand, but i'm someone will link one soon.

Yes, the short fan only cools the CPU. The long fan has an extension that fits over the GPU and cools it.

See - http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=26578& for a picture of the long fan.
