Swap Hard Drives Between T42 and T43?

#1 Post by james2008 » Sat Sep 13, 2008 11:05 am

Can you take a fully configured hard drive out of a T42 and put it into a T43 and have no problems?

Could you simply remove and install the right drivers on the first boot and be fine?

Are there any thinkpads that I can put a hard drive from my T42 (2379-DWU) into that this would work for?

You'd have the most luck with a T40, T41, or T42, as well as an R50 and R51. T43 has a different HAL...bad mojo.

It does run, but it isn't perfect, even if you replace all drivers. Also, you would get 2010 error

My brother says that he's been able to do it, but I've gotten a Blue Screen dump every time when Windows tries to load. So I end up reloading from scratch every time.

What transfers have you had bluescreens with? Even T42==>T42? Or only T4A ===> T4B?

Thanks to all for all of the information. This has got to be among the greatest communities on the WWW.

T41 to T43 and R51 to R52 which is for all intents and purposes the same thing in different cases.

Just to add my $0.02, for kicks I tried to install a T43 drive in my T42P and had no luck trying to restore the system from the factory image.

Tried pulling a fully configured drive from a T40 and transplanting it into a T43 before. Got a blue screen dump as well. Supposedly there's a program that preps drives for machine changes, but it isn't the best solution because of the PATA-SATA bridge in the T43
Cell phones are my specialty. Got questions? Ask away.

From T42/R51 to T43/R52, remove the video driver first when the drive is in the old system. When asked to load the Winbond Secure Platform driver, decline.

Never tried a down grade.
