T42 Compatible lcds

#1 Post by djT42 » Sun Sep 14, 2008 1:34 pm

I recently bought a a T42 without an lcd off of ebay and I'm searching for one to put on now. I'm curious if I could use another model's lcd for my T42 and, if possible, which thinkpad model's lcd are compatible with mine.

The best bet is to go to the Lenovo Support site and pull all the Hardware Maintenance Manuals for your T42 and the various models produced around that time which used screens of the same physical size, such as the T40, 41, 43 as well as R50, 51, 52. Then go down to the Parts lists and compare the FRU/Part numbers to see which ones had interchangeable ones. This should give you an idea of direct replacements. You can also do some cross model replacements that IBM didn't anticipate, such as putting an SXGA+ screen on a machine with the base ATI 7500 32mb GPU or putting a 15" SXGA+ Flexview screen on a machine with a Intel GPU.

So the possibilities are pretty staggering. There are even Forum members who have put on QXGA screen on their machines.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

I suggest to visit this page: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display

My T42 has Samsung LTN141XA.

However, the question is, what is the condition of your Thinkpad. Did you buy it with LCD broken, or without LCD frame at all (LCD torn apart)? If the problem is with broken LCD, you can buy another one on eBay or at the internet shop and replace it yourself... or ask someone to do the job for you.

T40/41/42/43 use a connector that is wired differently from "standard". Don't try another model. You risk cooking the LCD or motherboard.
