Dock 2878 with T40 - ext numeric keypad doesn't work

#1 Post by syrenab » Mon Sep 15, 2008 1:20 pm

I recently bought Docking Station 2878 to work with T40 and XP Pro.

The external numerical keyboard doesn't work. The keyboard is OK, works with my old desktop and with T22 which both are using Win2000.

Any ideas?

Does the keyboard work when you connect it directly to the T40? Is it a USB or PS/2 connector?

It's a PS2 connection and can only be connected via Dock. There is no PS2 connector on the T40

My first guess then is that the PS/2 connector on the dock is bad.
Do you have another PS/2 device (like an old mouse) with which you can test the port?
Alternatively, there might be PS/2->USB converters (I only know USB->PS/2 converters) which may allow you to use the keyboard via USB.

If the connector was bad the whole keyboard wouldn't work. It is only the numeric keypad that is not working - only with T40. Works OK with T22 and the old desktop unit. I am actually typing this on the keyboard in question. But when I hit the Numeric keypad - nothing happens and the Num Lock is on OK

Ok, you have a real keyboard and not one of these.

So, if num lock if off, do the keys work as cursor keys?

The one think I can think of that would cause those symptoms is also the cheapest thing to fix. Look in the BIOS under Config/keyboard. Make sure "num-lock" is set to "AUTO"

Thanks for the suggestions.

No, when the Number lock is off, the keys still do not work, i.e. the directional keys, PgUp, etc

I checked the BIOS. It is set to AUTO.

I tried with other settings for Number Lock and they made no difference at all.

BTW, my keyboard as a separate keypad with directional keys, PgUp, etc. They do work, regardless whether NumLock is On or Off.
The kepad on the laptop also works, but will not allow Num Lock to e set when the external keyboard is attached

I will borrow another keyboard to try out, just in case there is something strange in my keyboard.

I emphasize that everything works on the external keyboard, EXCEPT the numerical pad. And this only happens with the T40

Thanks for the responses.
