5k160 80gb Hitachi travelstar into t43 or t42p.

#1 Post by iluvtruenos » Tue Sep 16, 2008 6:14 pm

I have searched, but got mixed answers, and basically confused myself even more.

I have a native T42p HDD in my 42p. Can I place that disk into the 43 without having any 2010 errors, and install the replacement 5k160 80gb into the 42p?

I need a hard drive that will work in the 43 without any BIOS issues.

Any other suggestions for moderately cheap harddrives?

I think most Fujitsu MHVxx drives will not cause 2010 error. They are very cheap if you can still find them. The PATA drives are disappearing fast.

Depending on when your T42p was made, the drive may work as is. The later OEM drives used by Lenovo all had the modified FW.

If it does not and gives the 2010 error, the FW update software from Lenovo will flash the drive to update it with no problems.

The replacement 5K160 80GB drive can go into your T42p with no probelms whatsoever.

If you put the T42p drive into the T43 and get the 2010 error, like SteveS said you can get the HD firmware update utility from the Lenovo website here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62282

Applying the firmware update does not guarantee that the 2010 error will go away. I've tried it on two different drives, both of which were on the supported drives list. On one drive the error message was gone; on the other drive the message error continued to persist.

The FW update utility is only intended to upgrade IMB/Lenovo drives. Even if your drive model number is on the “supported list”, either the part number, or the FW version must match one that is corresponds to an IBM drive, in order for the routine to update the FW. For example, in the case of the now obsolete HGST 100 GB 7200 RPM drive, the utility will directly update a drive with FW version: IA51A. It will not upgrade version OA51A, or DA51A . All of these drives have the same model number, HTS721010G9AT00, and the firmware level is virtually identical. But the “I” in the FW version indicates the drive was build for IBM (Lenovo), the D is for Dell, and O is for generic OEM.

In the case of HGST drives, there is a two step work around that first reprograms the FW version to one the utility accepts, then once it believes it is a IBM drive, allows

Ack. You're right--I forgot to mention that. Small thing, but makes a world of difference.
