T42 - TPFanControl ini reality/sanity check

#1 Post by DaveG11th » Wed Sep 17, 2008 6:05 am

Same question that I asked on Lenovo forums, so sort of cross-posted....

Trying to get the most months out of a T42 with ATI 7500 before GPU failure.

TPFanControl was recommended to keep the GPU cool-ish. Looks good, but I need a cookbook setting (maybe I should say not-cook book) for my T42, and I didn't find one.

The default INI file had values that seemed way too high for me vis-a-vis fan run and speed. Again, I'm trying to keep things cool and fan noise doesn't bother me.

Are my settings:way off?

Code: Select all

Level=38 0        [100 F]
Level=40 1        [104 F]
Level=45 3        [113 F]
Level=50 6        [122 F]
Level=55 128    [131 F]

I don't think it would make that big of difference. The GPU is located a good distance from the exhaust fan and does not have a heatsink.

You would be better off underclocking the GPU. I have found that around 66mhz is the lowest the 7500 seems to run. I used ati tool to do this. That would make a bigger thermal difference, and you shouldn't see a performance difference unless you are watching videos or gaming.

Which version of TPFC are you running?

True, no heatsink, but according to TPFanControl, the GPU temp follows the CPU temp up and down, but 2-4 degrees C higher or lower (right now, CPU is 42 C, GPU is 41).
You would be better off underclocking the GPU....66mhz..... I used ati tool to do this.
Edit: Google helped me find AtiTool (one word) and install it. Have it running at 66mHz for GPU and memory both.

Thanks for the pointer to this utility!

Edited to clarify CPU/GPU temps.
Edited again after finding AtiTool

Can't find this anywhere on the exe or readme - Explorer properties says 1.0.0.50 - the file I downloaded was ptfc_v050 from http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/donate.html
