Does my T40 have USB 2.0 ?

#1 Post by koden » Fri Sep 19, 2008 4:34 am

If I plug a USB device into the machine it does not give me the balloon pop up that tells me that it can work faster. So I surpose it has USB 2.0.

But can I check it out someway?
I'm danish. Sorry for my sometimes bad english spelling and understanding.

You don't mention what T40 you have, but I guess it is a 2373-14G (based on your first post in the thread T40 have problem with screen that falls out), so I looked up the equilavent US-model of this (being the 2373-14U) which I found the detailed specs for in the tawbook (official title being: "Personal Systems Reference, IBM ThinkPad Notebooks A, T, X, and G Series, 2000 to 2005 - withdrawn, May 2005 - Version 291"); see page 47 there saying:
Ports:

Two USB (Version 2.0) / parallel / external DB-15 monitor / infrared (4Mbps) / RJ-11 (modem) / RJ-45 (ethernet) / no keyboard or mouse or serial ports (use USB)
PS: I suggest you consider updating your "footer" (currently saying: "I'm danish. Sorry for my sometimes bad english spelling and understanding") to be reflect things the way I beleive they are: I'm Danish! I read and understand English perfectly! :-)

This is a known issue on T4x machines, and amounts to a minor system board failure, when the USB ports revert to 1.1 or quit working altogether. Nothing short of motherboard replacement cures it.

My advice would be to get a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card and feed your needs from there.

Good luck.

I don't think i got that???

Do you mean that the USB sometimes act as a 1.1?

I have no problem when using my USB stick.

But when i boot up on a ghost.exe to make a ghost to my USB harddiks, it takes hours...... SShhhhhh... :-)

And my ghost get in error after some time....

Not every device that you plug in will trigger the "can work faster warning"...

i don't get "can work faster warning"... at all.

if i Move a file from my thinkpad to my USB harddisk, how fast does it than have to be moved if it's USB 2.0?

this way I could see if it's USB 2.0 speed?

or maybe ghost can't use 2.0 speed in DOS mode?

If your file transfer speeds are 1.5MB/s or lower, you're running at USB 1. If your file transfer speeds are 10MB/s or higher, you have USB 2 (assuming the hardware at the other end of the cable is USB2, eg a portable HDD). Note these are real MB/s not Mb/s!

Hello,

I suggest you to use HDTach, to bench your USB devices.

You'll find it here :

You do know that Ghost has a performance control - right. Default is very slow.
