T41 rescue - bad MOBO

#1 Post by kajencik » Sat Sep 20, 2008 5:39 am

Hello, so it's me again, with a project which should at least partially fund my X60t repair, so here we go:

I have a T41 with a bad motherboad, it's with a radeon 7500, and the previous owner had attempted reflow, as it showed the infamous GPU issue, but it totally screwed things up and now only the power LEDs will lit, but no POST, whether the screen or external VGA.

So, the only solution seems to be the motherboard swap...

But still... do you think that it is worth to try another reflow? Or is it possible to try reballing in a DIY enviroment?
X60t - 3GB RAM, 60GB HDD, currently no battery, SXGA+
X61t - 4GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 1 hour battery, SXGA+ with bubbles
T530 - i7-3630QM, 16GB RAM, 240+480GB SSDs, 3G, Full HD LCD, 9 cell battery

My vote has been cast, an R51 Intel GPU was a no brainer for my dead T41 --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=65505

A huge side benefit is the peace of mind from knowing that the GPU won't fail from using the laptop on your lap.

Once the reflow was screwed up, the chances of fixing this board are about zero.
