T43 Winbond TPM not functioning

#1 Post by t43tpad » Sat Sep 20, 2008 10:12 am

Hi, I have a Thinkpad T43 (1872) with BIOS version 1.29. I have enabled the TPM module in the BIOS, but when I try to view the properties of the Winbond 1.1 driver I get the error, "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". Obviously this doesn't help at all.

Does anyone know what is wrong?

The time I saw that error was when I was trying to get a T42 image to work on a T43. Is it possible you're doing that?

An image of what? I've tried many different drivers (including the one above) and they all are failures.

Sorry. I meant a disk image, like moving a T42 disk to a T43 or rebuilding the disk using T42 recovery CDs. Whatever you did, the way to install the driver is to download the driver from IBM and run it. It puts the device driver into C:\drivers\win\tpm. Next, go to device manager and delete the device. Then reboot. When the "found new hardware" wizard pops up, don't let him install automatically. Instead, tell him to install from a location you choose. (C:\drivers\win\tpm)

I ran the installer (1yza08ww.exe) and rebooted. No "New Hardware" balloon popped up. I also installed the driver via the "Add New Hardware Wizard" and I had the problem listed above.

What is the history of the Windows OS? Is it the original install or a rebuild from either the service partition or recovery disks?

If the hard drive was rebuilt using a generic Windows disk, you probably do not have the correct HAL for a T43. The TPM functionality (along with some other items such as power management) will not function without the correct HAL.

You can test this by right clicking on My Computer, then Properties, then the Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Double click on Computer. You should see :”ACPI Uniprocessor PC”. If it reads anything else, you have the wrong HAL.

It is either extremely difficult, or more likely impossible to change the HAL once Windows is installed. If it is the wrong one, your only choice is to rebuild the entire system using the correct Windows installer.

It is possible to operate with the generic HAL in a T43. I did it for a couple of months. However, in addition to the TPM features not working, some of the battery saving features don’t really work, even though the controls indicate they do. So your operating time on batteries will be much shorter. I also experienced a few random blue screens, at random times. After I rebuilt with the proper image, everything was fine.

Have you tried upgrading the bios? That may have a significant help for you.
