T42 - updating: Do I want Lenovo System Update 3.14?

#1 Post by DaveG11th » Sat Sep 20, 2008 5:23 pm

TP Newbie.

My new-to-me T42 2373-k1u has an IBM update app that links to a dead or missing IBM site.

Is what I want this: "System Update 3.14" from Lenovo?

It seems likely that some drivers or other bits could use updating on my computer, since it seems to have been last used in 2006, then mothballed.

However, right now, everything works just fine - wireless, graphics, file system, power management, etc.

I'm a lagging edge user, and in the past I've found that hardware suppliers with "universal" or "all in 1" update schemes don't have me on their radar when they configure automatic fixes.

Bottom line -- System Update 3.14... is it safe for me to use?

Am I going to break something if I download and use this?
Dave

Go ahead and download it--I did when it first came out and thought it worked great (I think there might have been a few TP users that had issues with 3.14).

Even if you don't download System Update, you can always get the latest drivers by going to the Lenovo website, clicking on "Downloads & Drivers" on the Support Tab at the bottom. When you get to the next page, you can click on "Detect my system" at the top right corner and it'll bring up all the downloads/drivers for your T42.

Hope that helps.

BTW, if you're worried about 3.14 messing something up just make sure to set a restore point and you should be ok should something go wrong.

Thanks, Kim-chee-san. Forgot about system restore.

D/l'd and run - no updates (!)

Plenty of new drivers on Lenovo's site, but I'll pass on installing them until I have some kind of problem. New BIOS as well, but again, pass until problems.

Much appreciated

System restore is not infallible - half the time I try to use it for a messed up system all I get is "System Restor was unable to complete the operation".

I love updating to the latest of everything but sometimes I think "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"!
