Bios Shows a different processor speed than Windows XP?

#1 Post by NovaKnowledgeNow » Mon Sep 22, 2008 3:11 pm

I recently bought a new CPU on craigslist. On the Chip itself it says 1.6M/1m/400.
When I put it in and booted up to Bios, the bios show :

CPU Type: "Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor"
CPU Speed: "3.00GHz"

When I load into Win XP and I check the My Computer properties, it lists it as "Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.60 GHz"

Can anyone explain the discrepency between what BIOS sees and what Windows sees?

It probably ia a 1.6 Celeron, which is not intended for your machine and is not correctly recognized in the BIOS. What is the designation on the CPU. (5 characters)

Confirms what richk said, it's one of the newer chips that are not in the BIOS. Shouldn't have a problem though, other than the usual decrease in battery/increase in heat that comes with Celerons.

I am not sure it will work right. I think the newer Celeron is expecting a lower voltage input, so I would be afraid of damaging (ruin) the chip. Perhaps someone else knows more about this than I do can help.

I believe the Celeron voltage is hardcoded just like the multiplier is (16x hardcoded, otherwise it would be stuck at 600mhz).
