Can you put a discrete card into the T43

#1 Post by i-SnipeZ » Thu Sep 25, 2008 7:20 pm

I am curious because ive read some things saying you can put one in even if you have the integrated and some that say no. Id really like a yes so I could run Aero and get some openGL support on Vista. Any support is apreciated. t would also be appreciated if you could give me some estimates on the cost of a T43 mobo w/ the discrete.

You cannot (practically) add or change the GPU of a T43 motherboard as its soldered to the board. I'd PM the forum member Brad about purchasing a motherboard with a good GPU.

Vista with Aero in full blast doesn't run well on T4x units. Take it from someone who had tested it out on both T42p and T43p with maxed-out RAM and 7200 rpm hard drives.

For something like that, you need a Core Duo CPU, preferably a C2D.

My experiences only.

Actually, the 16mb on the T23 isn't shared; the S3 chip has it's own dedicated ram. Doesn't change the fact the S3 chipset sucks though.

@ajkula66
Really? Its running fine on my FireGL V3200 and it was running fine on the Radeon X300 before I upgraded. Definitely need at least a 1GB RAM.

@sparta.rising:

Maybe I was expecting too much...but the only machine I've ever owned and was actually pleased with it running Vista was T61p with 4GB RAM...

I'm not saying one can't run Vista on a T43/p...my choice for these machines would always be XP, that's all.

Im running Vista on the T43 w/ the GMA900. I just want some [censored] OpenGL and Aero support. Oh, and Call of Duty 4. Half Life 2 wares down a bit after youve been playing it since it came out. I would also like some Oblivion, hense why i was curious about the graphics card. Is there any "better" mobo that could fit in the T43 case or am i talking crazy now.

Sure, you can install the planar from T43p with V3200 GPU...prepare yourself for expense and heat... :D

You should always prepare for heat and expense w/ the T series. I havent had a T model that hasnt been burning hot. All for the sake of good descrete graphics though xD

Well...not really.

T42 (non-p) can be quite cool even with Radeon 9600, which can't be said for T43 with X300, and especially not for T43p.

Yes, its hot, idles around 56oC with fan off on AC power. My X300 motherboard died and this was the best replacement I was offered. But that was a hot board too.
