Short fan+FIRE GL T2

Hello,

Can I try to post my "new" T42p mainboard with the short fan (without the graphics cooling block). I would just try to go to bios etc. I have long fan coming. I would like to check that everything works correctly.

I strongly DON'T RECOMMEND this, the FIRE GL can become very hot, mine in the R50p was once even above 110°C (and it shut down a while after that because of overhetaing, the R50p only has a separate passive cooler on the GPU). Also in BIOS, all the power saving features are disabled, so, as you leave the GPU alone, it will become very very hot in a short time, I'd definitely wait for the long fan if I were you.

BTW, could you mention where you got the board and for how much?

Well it's like driving your car around with out coolant in the engine. Sure, you could start it up long enough to take a cd out of the cd player, or go once around the block, but anything longer than a minute, it's going to overheat, and destroy your engine.

Now you said you have a long fan coming, what's so important that you need to start the computer up with the wrong fan(i'm assuming that's what you're asking). If you need to know BIOS stats, then yes, it should be fine, but don't run it very long.

OK, maybe I will put some passive aluminum profile with arctic silver on the graphics chip, if I hurry to test the board. Or maybe it is safer to wait for the long fan

I bought the board from ebay.de for 80 euros. Not too bad price if it is OK. The seller said the board won't display video on the internal LCD, but with external monitor it works OK. But he also said that the inverter was defect in that machine. So I think the board is OK. Also the board has warranty left (if I am eglible to the warranty without the whole machine?)

However I tested my processor in a board that smoked, so it would be nice to know if the processor is OK. If not i will order a new one (those are not expensive). I hope that IF the processor is defect, it won't burn this new board... Well what do you think, is it risky to try the processor in the "new" board?

Erm, I've actually done this (and yes it was a FireGL)... the GPU doesn't heat up instantly like a CPU, it took a minute or so to get warm.

Not an issue for a minute or two - in fact, I've always wondered if the long fan might actually increase the heat with that thick pad.

I've posted with no fan at all for one minute (ESC key at fan error message). The CPU takes a minute or two to heat up and the GPU takes even longer.

Just don't get distracted by a phone call or something, you really only have a minute or two with no fan.

You can use a utility to monitor the temps., too.

Good news. T42p/T41 booted OK! So the processor is good, the memory is good. I put a graphics card heat sink with arctic silver on top of the fire gl T2, and it doesn't get very warm. I guess I'm OK if I don't do any 3D

BUT: the backlight is not working. However, the screen is tested to be OK, also inverter and backlight. An external monitor works and also the internal LCD (if I use flashlight). What could be the problem? The seller said the same thing about the mainboard (no LCD backlight)...

Ok, after 45 min of use with a small graphics card heat sink, the fire gl T2 is at about 45 degrees celsius measured with multimeter temp sensor. The reason might be that I am using 1024x768 display, so less work for the graphics controller-> runs cooler.
