possible hdd failure

#1 Post by TimWang » Mon Sep 29, 2008 8:43 pm

I tried booting up my t43 but the computer won't load the windows screen and gives me a message that says operating system not found. I think this is a he'd failure as I get the same msg when I take out my drive. However I can still hear the drive spinning normally. Is there any way to check this problem? Btw, if it is the hdd, does anyone have an extra restore disk for a t43?

If its a hitachi drive, use the Hitachi Drive Fitness test:

I believe the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) also has a number of hard drive test programs:

Its also possible that the MBR or boot.ini are corrupted. Those might have different error messages, I don't remember. To fix this, load a Windows install CD, enter the repair console, type fixmbr and fixboot

would it also be possible to mount the drive to an external enclosure and check the drive that way? If it still works, I would be able to pull some files off the disk right?

Yes you could mount the drive in an external enclosure. Hopefully you can get your needed files.
