Strange T40 Motherboard Modification *PICS*

#1 Post by sparta.rising » Mon Sep 29, 2008 10:36 pm

So I just bought 2 T40's, both from the same person, both have the same product ID (2373-9CU). I bought them understanding they both had motherboard issues. One has a short on the board (see [ur=http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=67788]this thread[/url]) the other turns on but doesn't post (not GPU problem, pressing on the GPU doesn't work and reflow has no affect). I was looking at them both, and noticed something strange on the one with the short that I've never seen on a T4x or R5x board before. It wasn't present on the other T40, even though they should have the same motherboard.

Here's a comparison (click for higher resolution)

Any thoughts? Other than that the board is dusty

They do that sometimes, to fix a logic error or a PCB routing error.

I collected my fixed T41 (2373-9FH) last night from a computer store. Same wiring fix was also found on the replaced system board. Even wire color is exactly the same! Actually the replaced board is funny. I will share it on another thread.

Yep. It could also be an early revision of the board.

That is a normal way to fix a cracked trace

I have read this before, it is a common fix to repair broken solder traces.

I've seen it on a couple of T40's as well.

Probably, some of the first motherboards for T40's?
