High CPU usage when using MS Word...

#1 Post by nowstime » Wed Jan 05, 2005 8:55 pm

Hi~

My CPU usage goes up over 50% everytime I use the MS Word program. Due to the high CPU usage, the fan keeps running and its pumping out heat...

Is there any way to fix this?

System Idle Process and WINWORD.EXE shows high usage according to the Windows Task Manager...

Thanks in advance...

Something is wrong. I am burning a DVD, running Firefox and Winword, and typing this reply on my 1.8Mhz. T42. My CPU usage is averaging 10%. Spyware maybe?

Probably a Word Macro Virus.

Run the usual suite of antivirus / malware (including AdAware and Spybot) and see if anything comes up. Then check which macros are enabled. You'll find something.

Instead of "Word Document" type, try saving the document as "Rich Text Format" and work on the new document. I have Word 97.

There can be many different reasons for this, since Word is quite complex program :). I exierienced high CPU usage on some of my documents (on older machine up to 100% flat). This can be some bug in Word. But I know/noticed that automatic hyphenation of long documents can do this, also some complex formatting (frames, pictures, many different sctions types) or huge multipage tables with many rows and formatting.

But if it is doing with all documents (small, new etc) then it can be so because of macrovirus, try scanning your computer with AV software.
