T42p no sound in Windows

#1 Post by iraqigeek » Fri Oct 03, 2008 4:28 pm

Hi,

My T40p's motherboard had the infamous graphics problem. So, I bought a T42p instead, and moved my hard drive from the T40p to the T42p. Almost everything went fine. Almost because despite having the sound chip (Analog Devices SoundMAX) showing in my device manager and saying that its working properly, I cannot hear anything in windows, both on the speakers or with headphones plugged.

However, when using the PCDoctor ISO, the sound test runs fine, and I have enabled the beep sound when changing volume in the BIOS and I can hear the beep with the laptop speakers or with headphones attached.

I tried downloading the driver again from IBM, un-installing, rebooting, re-installing, rebooting again for 3 times now, but to no effect.

If I try to run any audio file, it will play without any error messages through WMP, but I can't hear any sound.

Running Windows XP SP3. Any ideas what's wrong? I'm pretty sure its a software issue.

Have you checked the sound settings
Try
Windows key + R

type 'sndvol32' Enter

see if the general volume is not muted.

I would emphasize making sure the sound isn't muted.
I recently had a laptop returned with the same fault.
In fact the sound was muted and simply needed the Loudspeaker Up button to be pressed.

Also go into Control Panel > System > Hardware Devices, and check that all the drivers are installed (no exclamation marks etc against an individual driver).

The sound is not muted, in fact its set to max. I can hear the computer beeping when you plug/unplug the power adapter.

Already been there, and as I satated in my original post, the SoundMax chip shows as installed and "working properly" and no errors will pop-up if I try to open an audion or video file using Windows Media Player, however no sound will come out from the speakers or using headphones.

The Windows XP installation is the same that was running on my T40p. I just moved the hard drive to the T42p. Could that be a problem? Is the SoundMax chip in the T42 the same as that on the T40???
