Memory Error on Shut Down.

#1 Post by dgyee » Sat Oct 04, 2008 10:00 am

I am having a problem shutting down my T40 2373-72U. I get an error message that XP cannot clear the virtual memory. This message only displays a few seconds before the machice shuts down satisfactorily. I do not have any problems other than this message. Does anyone know how I can clear this message. I have been to several sites trying different things identified in Google postings. No luck.. The machine has 512kb of ram which should be sufficient for XP. Thanks,

Delete your pagefile/ find a page file cleaner to delete it.

Any suggestions on a good page file cleaner. I couldn't find much with my search.

Right clic on My Computer > Properties > Advanced > In performance go to "Settings", then "Advanced" and click "Change" clic "No Paging file" and then "Set".

Restart the computer, then do these steps again, but instead of clicking "No Paging file", select "Custom size" and put a fixed size. For example: Initial size: 2046, maximun size: 2046.

Clic "Set" and the restart the machine again. Now you have a new page file.

Sorry for my english

Yes, thanks.. I reset the virtual memory as you suggested but the error condition still exists. Any other ideas..

TP newbie here, but since the pagefile is on the hard disk, would it make sense to do a stress test on the HD? Maybe something is malfunctioning there.

(Does PC Doctor have a thorough test for the hard disk?)

It might prudent to save a disk image prior to leaning on the -- in computer terms -- aging HD.

Defragging probably wouldn't hurt ("Analyze" will generate a report showing if there is noticeable pagefile fragmentation).

But it's an interesting error I'll look up, also.

OK, try this and see if it makes a difference. I'll bet it currently says Enabled; try disabling it (or vice versa if already turned off) and test it out.
  • 1. Go to Control Panel
    2. Open Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy
    3. Go to Local Policies -> Security Options
    4. Then change the option for “Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile”
[/b]Reboot once to make it take effect then see if you get the error on the next shutdown after that. I'd be interested in the exact working of the error messge, by the way.

Switching off virtual memory is not a good idea, especially if you have ONLY 512MB RAM. That virtual memory is turned on for the reason...

It seems you have a problem with software installed on your ThinkPad. Do you have harddisk encryption software installed? DriveCrypt? TrueCrypt? Something else? Do you use encryption of system partition? Do you encrypt the partition that holds the pagefile?
If so, then you should look for the right solution at the software developer website.

Thanks for all your responses. I tried all:

- Clearing the page file. I don't know how to clean the page file.
- Clearing the virtual memory.
- Stress testing the hard drive should not have an effect on this.
- Defraging the hard drive.

Ones again my error message is:

"The instruction memory (hex address) cannot be found. Press OK to continue"

After a few seconds, the machine then shuts down normally.

From the other (now locked) thread you started:
Harryc wrote:Check the application and system logs. Any red or yellow flagged errors that appear to be related to the time of shutdown?
dgyee wrote:Thanks but I couldn't find any error messages other than the following at shutdown which only displays a couple of seconds and then machine shuts down and operates normally.

"The instruction memory _________ cannot be found. Press OK to continue"
Just to make sure that everything is clear here, what Harry is saying is to check the system logs which are accessed here:

Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer

Check the Application, Security and System logs for any information that is a warning (yellow flag) or error (red flag). That might give you a clue as to the program or event that is causing the problem.

i'm suspecting the OP installed some software which isn't shutting down properly ... or has a hard drive issue.

To bypass the former, there is a timeout period that Windows is willing to wait for applications to cleanly exit on system shutdown (WaitToKillAppTimeout). It's set in the Registry, but can't find the article in MIcrosoft's KB. ,:\ [1]

Certainly, run a CHKDSK C: /F (which requires a reboot) to fully check the disk.

This could also be the result of virus or Trojan shenanigans; ensure your antivirus software is updated and running. You might also consider uninstalling the most recently installed applications, in case a recently installed TSR app is misbehaving on shutdown.

[1] Ah! I found a third party article about this that's concise. Be aware that editing your Registry without some experience (or a backup!) can be very risky to your system stability. Go slowly and carefully....

I'm not sure that this will fix your problem, but if it IS an issue of an app which needs more time to shut down and write to the page file, increasing the timeout to 20000 (20 seconds) or more may be needed. (Some people may set this timeout much lower with third party "tweak" tools without knowing what the impact really is.)
