My cat loves my thinkpad

#1 Post by Cyberstudio » Wed Oct 08, 2008 7:29 am

I have 2 cats. One is named "Claudia" and the other "Rat". They love to sit on top of my thinkpad (t43) when the lcd is closed.

My question is: That can be bad for the screen? They aren't heavy cats, just normal adult cats.

Thanks :)

I doubt the weight of them would effect anything. But dander and hair are bad mojo for LCD's :). Not to mention the fact that if they aren't declawed they will scratch the heck out of the lid. Now, if one of them decided to take a leak ... LOL

Perhaps you're using the wrong LCD cleaner?

Don't know why they do that. Maybe the lcd is as good for them as the keyboard for us? :P

They don't leave scratches or hair, what they leave is white foot marks.

So, there is no risk?

I have two cats in my house too. They sometimes sleep, walk, or sit on top of my dad's T41 when the LCD is opened or closed. The T41 LCD is still fine because I believe that the T40 series has a magnesium LCD cover which protects the LCD from pressure. Don't worry about it. :)

Our family found a great cure for the "climbing cat" problem. Get a small mousetrap. Put blocks on the base where the striker sits. When it snaps shut it will not hurt the cat, just scare the heck out him. Use large enough blocks so the striker only moves an inch or so.

Tape the trap to the lid. After one or two little "incidents" kitty will learn to stay away. Not even necessary to set the trap after that. Works on couches, kitchen counters and other places, too!

If you have ATi graphics, I think having cats on top is a poor idea. The LCD closed, makes the machine more rigid, but there is still some flex. The flex either causes or contributes to the graphics chip problem discussed at lenget in the forum.

Graphics problem?? that part scares me. I had 2 T40 and both of them die by the gpu problem.

I bought this T43 (x300 graphics) because someone told me that T43 did not have the GPU problem.

Now i ask... Did T43 also have the GPU problem??

Sorry for my bad english.

They do, but it is much less common, as they changed the soldering process for the T43, but still, there were a few T43s mentioned here in the thinkpads forum with the infamous GPU problem.

Can you imagine what would happen if you had a cat 'lion' on your laptop - then you would definitely have a giraffics problem...

...or is that a bit of a tall story???

There IS a mild amount of flex, even in the T43 magnesium lid. I found when I used the "cup" TrackPoint tip, after traveling with my laptop in a messenger bag (padded), I'd have a faint "O" on the screen where the TrackPoint tip touched the LCD. (Solution: put a sunglass cleaning cloth over the keyboard before closing. Also handy for cleaning the screen from time to time.)

I would use one of the methods mentioned to prohibit Morris from napping on the nice, warm, black laptop.
