Wireless signal ALWAYS shows 100% (impossible)

#1 Post by gaiageek » Wed Oct 08, 2008 10:47 am

I recently upgraded my T42's with the latest 11a/b/g (Atheros) wireless drivers and Access Connections v5.02. Now, when I look at the Access Connections signal strength meter, it always shows 100%, even in spots where it used to max out at 35%. It also shows this despite also showing the transmit rate as being 6.0 Mbps, so I know it can't be accurate.

While it works fine as far as transmitting data, I would like to get the signal strength meter functioning properly again, as I often use it to find the sweet spot when signal strength is low. (I'm sure many others know what I'm talking about: moving the laptop a few inches left or right, or tilting the screen a little and getting an extra 5-10% boost in signal strength.)

I just booted into safe mode, uninstalled both the drivers and Access Connections, rebooted into normal mode, installed the drivers, rebooted, then installed Access Connections. Signal meter still says 100%.

Additional background: The main reason for installing the newer driver and Access Connections was because of a conflict between Windows and Access Connections. Sometimes I would try to use the Windows repair connection function and I would receive an error saying that it was unable to disable the connection. Then I would try powering off the wireless through the Fn-F5 Access Connections screen, but if I remember correctly, that didn't always work either. I was using Windows for all wireless config prior, as I've never been too fond of Access Connections, feeling that sometimes it just creates problems, but I did have Access Connections installed for its signal strength meter.

Any suggestions?

Are you using the original lenovo driver?? or other driver?

If not, you should download the driver from lenovo.

Using the latest driver from Lenovo. I'd happily try an alternative though, especially if it includes an alternative signal meter.

There have been problems reported in the past specifically with Atheros cards always showing 100% signal strength. You might want to do a search and see what comes up.

Cheers,
