Modem does not detect a dial tone when undocked

#1 Post by jas0441 » Wed Oct 08, 2008 12:37 pm

My modem works fine using the phone line jack on the laptop itself or on the docking station when it is docked, but when I try to use the modelm when the laptop is undocked, it does not detect a dial tone.

I have used the diagnostics and it says the modem is working correctly. Any ideas what I can do?

It would make better sense if the laptop jack didn't work at all. In that case, I would suggest a bad jack or a modem cable unplugged from the motherboard. Is it possible you have profiles set to have different device drivers docked vs. undocked?

If I do have different profiles, I did not set them up and I cannot find any that are specific to being docked or undocked. Do you know where I could look for such setting. The Diagnostics facility directed my to check the communication ports, and those were set up correctly.

There is a "Y' shaped cable in the computer, two ends are plugged into the MB and one end on the modem CDC. Make sure the two MB ends are plugged in properly.

The comment about the cable was what I was talking about when I responded above, but the unplugged cable doesn't make sense if the thing works from the normal modem jack when docked. The cable just connects the 2 wires in the modem to the 2 pins on the RJ11 jack on the side and also to the 2 pins on the docking station connector. There is no switching or anything.

Windows has the hardware profiles accessible from the System Properties window. You can get to it using one of these methods:

- right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop and choose Properties, then click the Hardware tab and finally the Hardware Profiles button.
- Start/Settings/Control Panel/System, then follow the same instructions above from Hardware tab.

If you are using Access Connections, then there might be a separate profile. I'm not sure if this would be the case since I don't use AC.
