worth the upgrade?

#1 Post by Jiro » Sat Oct 11, 2008 1:38 am

my t41p has a banias 1.6 ghz cpu in it... is it worth it to upgrading to a dothan 1.6ghz? 1.8ghz? 2.0ghz? 2.1ghz?

my comp already has a 7200rpm harddrive... and 2 x 512 sticks... would i be better off upgrading the ram to 2 x 1024?

how much improvement will i see going from
1.6 banias with 1 gig ram to 2.0ghz dothan 2 gig of ram?

or
should i just buy a dang lenovo x200
haha

2GB PC2700 will be fairly expensive. 1.6, 1.7Ghz Dothan should be pretty reasonable.

I would do both....
2gb of crucial pc2700 sodimm $56 shipped right now. (Newegg)
$15 for a Dothan 1.6
Sell your 2 512's for say $25 and the upgrade is <$50
or.... just buy 1 1gb sodimm and keep a 512 for a total of 1.5gb
(you won't see much difference with 512mb less)

If you can upgrade the memory for 56 bucks, go for it. The 1.6 dothan upgrade will be a waste of time and money. Even going from 1.6 Banias to 2.0 Dothan was a marginal upgrade for me.

IMHO, if you will continue to run XP Pro, and it does what you need it to do, then 1GB RAM is plenty. If Vista is your bag and you need an ultraportable, go for the X200 and stuff it with RAM.

Whether you'll see an improvement or not by adding RAM will depend on how you use the laptop, of course. Recently I've seen 1GB sticks of PC2700 memory for as little as $17 after rebate, and at that price I'd buy it in a flash.

But beyond that, I agree with the others. If this one works perfectly, save your money for a new machine.
