Updating Firmware on (retail?) MK4019GAX to IBM FW - FA005B

#1 Post by adegn » Tue Oct 14, 2008 6:11 am

Hi there,

I am a new owner of a used T41. I bought it from the company where I work without a hard drive.

I had an old retail Toshiba MK4019GAX that I have inserted. Now, I read some information on updating the firmware to the IBM FA005B version. The actual version is FA002D (I think it is retail)
but I am not sure.

Complete guide for flashing a retail HD to IBM official FW: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20858

The guide seems to work for the Hitachi drives - but it doesn't work for my Toshiba. I tried using the HFUT10.exe in the following ways:

HFUT10 FA005B FA005B.COD
HFUT10 FA005B -pm FA005B.COD
HFUT10 -pm FA005B.COD

the last line leads to the drive spinning up while the update program is running. About one second later, the command prompt returns and the disk stops. No error message. I tried HFUT10 -help, HFUT10 -h, HFUT10 -?, HFUT10 /? and many other switches to get help on the HFUT10 update program, but it doesn't seem to have any help. Googling for it leads to nothing - at least to no documentation.

Now my question: Has anybody got some documentation on the HFUT10.exe (Toshiba firmware upgrade tool Ver2.30) or even better: Succeeded in using it to upgrade a Toshiba Hard drive.?

Best regards

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I don't know a cure for your trouble, but I doubt that the firmware upgrade is needed, this is true for the T43, because you get the 2010 error message if using a generic drive, but IMHO it is fine for the T41.

ok, thanks. I haven't noticed any problems - I just read about this 2010 message so I thought, I'd better upgrade... :)
