IBM 11b/g vs. IntelPRO 2200BG. Does it matter?

#1 Post by mb1999 » Sat Jan 08, 2005 3:36 pm

Very basic question, don't laugh:

What is the difference b/w IBM 11b/g WiFi
and Intel PRO 2200BG wireless?

There is a JTU on the epp site that is $90 cheaper than FTU, and the only diff. is the above wireless component. Is there a functional difference? Any reason to spend $90 more? Thanks much.

I haven't checked up recently but I dont remember seeing an IBM b/g card. If you'd like the addtional functionality of operating on the 5.8ghz band, the a/b/g card would be better.

The Intel is a Centrino card that should use less power.

Now that intel has a solid driver for the 2200b/g, it doesn't really matter in general. Just go for the cheaper one.

If you ever want to use linux, go for the IBM a/b/g card. And if you you are a heavy microwave user, go with the a-standard :-)

I too am deciding between the ibm BG card or the Intel one. The intel is significantly cheaper, but I dont want to get it and be sorry later on.

I think most of us probalby have the Intel card. I have the Intel one and it works perfectly fine.
I don't think it matters...a networks a network, eh?

Well I just ordered the Intel PRO 2200 b/g card for my T30, I will see how that works out. The IBM one was $60+, I got the intel for $38 shipped.

IIRC, the Intel card has four or five automatic power states based on wifi usage.
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...
