Unmountable Boot Volume Error T40

#1 Post by Derro » Tue Oct 28, 2008 7:59 am

So when I start up T40 2373 (as of this morning) I get the blue screen Unmountable Boot Volume Error, what is this and how do I fix it. I haven't upgraded anything and it was working fine last night?!?!?!

Welcome to the forum!

Hopefully you just need to run chkdsk and its nothing more
serious. If you have any Windows XP CD boot from it and go to the recovery console. At the C prompt type chkdsk.

Perhaps you could borrow or buy one? This is a standard install disk from any retail or OEM XP installation. It is possible the same retail or OEM Vista disk would work as well.

Try bit torrent.

After you find a WinXP CD, here is the MS article on the unmountable boot volume - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555302

Your ThinkPad should has Windows XP Pro sticker on bottom side (it was default OS for it I think). You need only some media and that can be downloaded from web (or borrow it). Anyway, for the recovery console you can use any Windows XP CD you want (Home, Pro, OEM or not, does not matter).

Okay so I have run chkdsk and it got to 32percent and stopped saying, something like problem with disk sections. When I try to boot it up off the hard drive it sounds like it is spinning fine I am still awaiting a set of system recovery disks.
What is next and will I be able to get the data of this harddrive or is it time and game, I was going to install a faster/bigger hd anyway but Ideally would have cloned this one .
Cheers

From your description of the chkdsk result there is a distinct possibility your hard drive has failed. It could be time to implement your recovery plan.

Another diagnostic to perform is the Hitachi drive fitness test. This test can be run from a bootable CD. You can find the utility here. This utility can tell you if your hard drive has failed.

You need to run chkdsk with the /p function:

chkdsk /r

to force chkdsk to repair the bad sectors or make Windows dismiss those so that I can boot properly.

Also you may want after that is completed type fixboot command at the prompt.

Okay
i have run chkdsk /r now twice and it get to 50% and give me
The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems

Should I just keep running chkdsk?
Will it keep getting better  ?
Is this any indication of the state of the disk e.g. prob will end up working fine

Thanks for the help

It will not get any better. Just stop running the hard disc, get a new one, install Windows on it and and try to salvage your data from the old one.
