T42 Fan Question!

#1 Post by nykobing06 » Tue Oct 28, 2008 11:21 am

I got some good feedback on my thread but alas, I have a few questions left.

My T42, after checking IBM it looks like I have a short fan.

Question is, I was told to upgrade to a M10? Long fan that covers both the GPU and CPU. Is this possible or should I stick with the short fan. Its the only thing stopping me from ordering and fixing my beloved T42! :(

I did have one other question which I couldn't find the answer to in my search of this site...

Has anyone heard of a link between a Fan Error and the power supply source/power port problems. Though it's only happened three times, the problem cropped up at the same time as the fan error. If move the computer off my lap and it happens to tug the power cord, the computer just shuts off...bam...nothing. Restarts just fine but then I ran into fan errors. I would blow into the fan to give it a "kickstart"...it worked but the computer would get much hotter than before. Subsequently, I stopped doing that so I don't fry the MB. I know, not very smart but I needed to finish my work :?

Hi,

The long fan will be fine also in a machine that does not need it (i.e if it has the ATI 7500 GPU). It may help to run the graphics chip cooler (although it is normally cool enough anyway without it).... so it's your pick..

Thanks FTC, I appreciate the input. I think I'm going to order a fan today!

The advantage of the long fan is it runs quieter than the short fan. Look for long fan model numbers 13R2657 or 41W5204.

41W5204 is the one I ordered.

It was a pleasant surprise to find the Long fan cheaper (~ $32) than the short ($55). :D

If it turns out to be the power port problem you can probably by a new DC powerjack here for less than $10

You're welcome. Glad to hea you're up and running.

I just bought a T42 for a friend yesterday notwithstanding all the
talk about the flexing and GPU issues. The three year warranty expired on October 8 (last month). I'm hoping Lenovo will let me
extend it for another year even though it recently expired.

Some think there are only two kinds of T42s. Those that have failed due to the fled and GPU problems, and those that will.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

The sad fact of all computers is that something is bound to fail sooner or later no matter how much we love the machine.... regardless of model. 600> charger/battery, T2x> blink of death, A2x> MB fuses, T30> RAM slot, and the list just goes on. Plus that only covers the stuff that isn't typical such as the HDD, backlight, etc.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505
