I found a post on another board that had a link to another site with a side by side camparison of the T42P 14.1 and 15 inch units. I thought some of you here would like to see them.

I should've been clearer... The 15" looks too much like an R, which, oh well, looks very gayHow does it look "gay"? It looks like a ThinkPad to me.
I'm seriously reconsidering my T42-purchase. The 14" might be okayish, but deep down I know I'd be happier with a Dothan X-series.

I completely agree. The 14" looks much, much sleeker. The 15" really does look a lot lik an R series, and it is also "xbox hueg"akeskira wrote: I should've been clearer... The 15" looks too much like an R, which, oh well, looks very gay
That's why, the 14" models are better. it's sleeker. see my prior post.

Couldn't resist a reply. I've been lurking here for a few months now and appreciate all the info. I bought a R40 in March and with the 15" screen it was just too big so I sent if back. My T42 came in Thursday and it's size and the 14" screen is perfect.
By the way, the reason I bought an IBM in the first place is because for the past 4 or 5 years I've borrowed an old 380XD from a business I consult with and have had zero problems with it - it has been bulletproof. So when the software I use finally outgrew it the only decision was what kind of IBM to buy.

Wow. Well, that just helped finalize my decision. The 14-inch is the winner. The extra inch of diagonally viewable screen doesn't look like its worth the weight, size (those few mm in thickness makes a difference), and money. I hate to say it but the 14 incher really makes the 15-incher just look bloated, never thought I would see that in a T-series.
Great find!

IMHO, the only real reason to consider the 15" is the Flexview/IPS screen. I love my Flexview screen. But I hated to give up the 14.1" form factor to get it. For me, it was a worthwhile tradeoff, since there is a substantial difference in brightness, contrast, and clarity between the IPS screen in the 15" model and the regular TN in the 14.1".
The extra bulk looks like a lot in the pictures, but in reality you don't notice it. The extra weight is almost imperceptable as well. This is because the extra space the 15" model chassis takes up is mostly empty space...the case is just bigger to match the dimensions of the bigger screen.

I'm really interested in the PCMCIA doors shown on the 14" T in that pic? Anyone have any ideas... it looks like a better design than the door flap (as seen on the 15".)
BTW, IBM could fix the door flap design if they used a metal axle vs the plastic (which is too flexible) on the door flap (the axle which the spring loops around) I wonder if they fixed that with either the T41 or T42 (the door now has notches on it which the old one didn't)

For me it looks like two SD card readers. Not sure about it. Never seen something like this on a T model. But if this is the one that comes with the new T42, you might be able to order one from IBM and replace it yourself (if it's compatible).
Edit: I'm talking about the 14" model. But it might be just a spacer.

I saw both models side by side in our ThinkPad center.
actually they are not much different in size. The 15" is as falt as the 14" when the lid is open. The base is almost identical, but there is NO creacky palmrest. it is rather rock solid like on the venerable T2x series. Very nice. The total height, when closed, is exactly like the T2x series. Not too bulky!
The screens are very similar, when you sit right in front of it. But at the slightes angle, the 14" washed out immediately. The 15" is perfect, although pretty thick.
Hmm... I have the T40p and have problems with the washing outs and am really thinking about upgrading to the 15" flexview.
However, what I heard from the sales guys is, that the Flexview sucks the battery as if there were no tommorrow!!
I guess with the 6 cell battery it's only 2 -2.5 hours? Am I mistaken? I will not want the 9 cell, because in sum this would then be too heavy. Any experiences on batteries?

There is a noticeable difference in weight, the 15" is quite a bit heavier than the 14"(and I guess the 15" just exceeds the limit for everyday travel for me), but the screen really saves the day for 15", the 14" doesn't come quite close to it(well, depands on what you do), I am working with both, so I take 14" in my backpack, at home I use my 15" as a desktop replacement, if I could only work with one, and 14" flexview is unborn, I'd go with 14" for my needs, but if you don't travel with it much, 15" is great desktop replacement, I can't say enough good things about its screen.
I also feels that the 14" is more pleasent for typing(I got Thai keyboard on both, so the keyboards are comparible) as there the palmrest on 14" gives a nice slope(thinker at the back and thinner at the front, also, what makes the difference in comfort when typing is the thinkness of the front part of the base, I am talking about typing at a desk, of course) compared to the roughly horizontal base of 15", 14" wins out, but again you get the screen tradeoff for your eye comfort in 15". lol, I can't talk this for too long, all depands on what you need
edit: about battery, with no settings changed, I only get about 2:40 hours' battery life with my 15" 2379DXU, about an hour more in my 14"
