Performance hard drive shootout for our T-series
Performance hard drive shootout for our T-series
So we have the most powerful Pentium M processors, the nicest screens, the toughest casings, the best keyboards in the market, etc... What performace hard disk would you put into your notebook given they cost the same at about $150?
Note: No, I didn't make a mistake. The Seagate Momentus 5400.2 100GB is going for $152.11 including shipping and tax, at Dell online!

X61 7675-CTO Merom 2.0GHz 4GB RAM, 7K200 HDD
Ill take the 16mb cache model
I think it will prove it self to be faster then the 7200 rpm's a random read and write. And thats what ill do all day
If you are going to rip files and stuf, sure the 7200rpm would be faster.
But as for now I am stuck to a 4200rpm 40gb 1.8" hdd in the X40
But a T42 is on its way with a 5400rpm 60gb drive
(8mb cache i think)

I have a T23 and I just installed my 7K60 yesterday from a 30GB 4200RPM drive. The drive is quieter (didnt make the loud clicks like my old one) and it did save me about 5 minutes doing a virus scan. The time for loading programs like Photoshop stayed the same or maybe even a little longer
. I was expecting a lot more performance but I really cant say much since I only have 256MB RAM. Next upgrade is a 512MB stick from Crucial.
Edit: It seems like my hdd is spinning all the time and its kind of irritating. I dont remember it doing this on my old one. I used SpeedSwitchXP to turn it off after 3 minutes but nothing happened. It stayed on until the monitor shut off (5 min). Anyone know a remedy?

Can you post some benchmarks or some screenshots from atto or an other diskbenchmark program.pdudas wrote:Toshiba MK8026GAX is a very slow HDD.
Although it has 16MB cache, it is slower than my thinpad's original Fujitsu MHT 2040AH.
Slower, louder, hotter.
Piece of [censored].
But now i know this: Hitachi 7K6
Only, I am stuck with the 60gb 5400

got the 60GB hitachi 7200rpm drive in my T41p. Its fast, doesn't get very hot and I can hardly ever hear it. Only when it spins up at max load. The spin when near idling or working generally in windows i cannot hear.
Så my vote's for that one

So the Toshiba's 16MB cache HD proved to be very slow and poor performer.
Then there are Hitachi's 5K80 and 7K60. From the reviews I think they had ver similar performances overall.
I don't know about segate 5k100. Have not read any performance reviews.
So my final choice would be Hitachi 5K80 8MB cache. I could use extra 20GB.

I would call the Toshiba MK8026GAX slow if I thought the difference between 203 and 199 was significant. I don't, so I won't. It depends. The 7200 RPM is the fastest of the bunch (those nine, anyway), but it's 7200, and it's a notebook, and it costs a little more. It will load programs the first time the fastest, but if you have the memory, the OS cache will handle almost all prior-seen accesses and so the disk, hopefully, comes into play so little that "10% faster" only "1% of the time" is hardly worth the wind noise. But, if all things were equal, of course, the fastest is always the bestest.
M4A:
It was really slower than the original MHT2040AH.
Slower, very hot (the palmrest vas about 40-45 C°), and louder.
I made a clean restore from the backup DVD, and after that I find slower made a drive copy from the fujitsu.
Both of them was very slow.
I dont know the reason of this slow working, but it was terrible for me.

Probably not relevant, but I installed a Hitachi 7K60 in my Sony K25 (replacing a Hitachi 4K60) and it was clearly faster but it also made the palmrest vibrate and it was nosier, too. Eventually I decided it wasn't all that much faster, for my purposes, and reinstalled the stock drive.M4A wrote:I would call the Toshiba MK8026GAX slow if I thought the difference between 203 and 199 was significant. I have given some thought to getting a 5K60 to see if that, too, produces the vibration of the 7200 rpm drive.
Meanwhile, I'm quiet and vibration free. I assume you don't have the same problem with the Thinkpads (I've yet to put the 7K60 in any of my T20/T23 Tpads).
