Problem with rebooting T20 2647-81G.

#1 Post by F_G » Mon Jan 10, 2005 12:22 pm

I have IBM TP T20 2647-81G the last version of BIOS.
There was WIN 98SE ENG, operated without problems, then I setup WIN XP SP1,
all drivers setuped, it works half a year ,very stable, but there is one problem.
When I want reboot my notebook , I can`t do it because it stops working on the stage of loading windows, so I do all functions that need reboot notebook by switch on/off.
Then I setup service pack 2 but this problem saved.
In WIN 98 there isn`t this problem.
How can I repair this problem?
Thank you.

Not sure if this will be of any help, but I'll offer a thought or two.

First, do you have any third party software that may be causing the system hang while rebooting? I am not sure, but I think a reboot may not fully flush ram and all that, so there may be something wedging and blocking the completion of the boot.

I have also read here I think, that sometimes you might have to let the system sit for a bit to see if it will finally boot. And when I say a bit of time waiting, I mean more than a minute or two, more like leaving it for an hour. Sometimes the system restore hangs while it corrects or rewrites a restore point.

Are you shure nothing else changed? Perhaps some new ram or pcmcia cards or the like? Maybe a driver for a pcmcia card does not like a reboot without a full power down.

When you installed WinXP, did you upgrade or do a clean, formatted install?

Latest BIOS I see from IBM website is: IYET61WW - 1.22
Is this the BIOS you now have?

Last thought until more information is provided. Did you try resetting all BIOS values to default?

Clean install , no formatted.
If not formatted, you reused the existing partitions and left the existing Windows 98 install in place?

How and when did you do a full delete? Did you actually delete all the hidden, system, and read only files too? I do not understand the logic of a 'full delete' but no format?

Now I am shooting in the dark, but wondering if there might be a service that is not being properly stopped prior to reboot, or is trying to start too early upon reboot.

Do you have any added services? I know I asked before but was wondering if there is something not quite right in there. How about something in your program files folder that always tries to start? Take a look into your startup folder to see if there is something there that gets wedged upon restart.

Do you have any clues in your log files? If you have 'My Computer' on your desktop, right click on it and select 'Manage' then look in the event viewer to see if anything is marked as being a problem...
