T42: dual boot Windows/Linux

#1 Post by zver17 » Mon Jan 10, 2005 4:00 pm

how hard is it to cnfigure a T42 for a dual boot windowsXP and linux? Does the pre-installed IBM paraphernalia affect matters? Would a 60GB (7200rpm) drive be sufficient in space and would I notice a decrease in speed if switch to a 80GB 5400rpm drive?
many thanks

it's not that hard really. currently i have Windows XP, and Suse Pro dual boot. The only hard part is figuring out your partition, and for that I just use Partition Magic.

Right click on your drive and choose resize adjust the slider to whatever size you want your linux partition to be reboot computer wait for windows to load up download your flavor of *inx (Suse is the easiest IMO) burn cd(s)/dvd pop it in reboot booting from cd-rom drive and just follow the instuctions on the screen.

If you really wanna make it as simple as 1-2-3 then prep your drive properly. Meaning set up your partitions via Partition Magic in windows.

i.e. 60GB HD

30GB (windows)
500MB-1GB (linux swap)
20GB (linux)

keep in mind it won't be do that degree as i am using HD mfg labeling (divide by 1024)

Are you using grub or lilo? Anything you can report there about which one would be smoother?

Right now I have dual boot XP and Gentoo Linux with Lilo. I can't seem to get grub to work...maybe I have to force LBA use.

Still with my previous FC1 installation Grub worked fine on the same machine.

Lilo is a bit primitive but works in more setups compared to Grub (from my experiance...)

Yep, that's exactly what I've found too. Once had a Suse install (9.1 I think) that wouldn't boot up with grub. Re-doing it with lilo worked fine.

I currently run a Windows 2000 Pro / Ubuntu Linux (Warty) on my desktop, but I figure it is pretty much the same. I used System Rescue CD for my partitioning, as it is free and works just as well.

so do you have to manipulate/remove the 'hidden partition' when installing linux?

and does dual boot interfere in anyway with the security features (eg, HDD/power-on password), etc?

If you want to use IBM Rescue and Recovery you cannot install grub into the MBR (because R&R makes some changes to the MBR). IMO it is much more saver and easier to use the XP Bootmanager to point to grub, when grub is installed in a small (30 MB) additional partition. This is the way to go when you want to avoid all possible difficulties caused by Software (if it's some Windows Software or just the famous fedora core 2 bug).

Interesting. Do you have a pointer to documentation about working with the "XP Bootmanager"?

I too would like to know how to point the XP bootloader to GRUB when it is installed somewhere other than the MBR. Thanks.

I did some searching, and found this page which looks like it'll be useful.

"Dual-Boot Linux and Windows 2000/Windows XP with GRUB HOWTO"
http://www.geocities.com/epark/linux/gr ... HOWTO.html

I'll personally probably get around to trying this out in the next day or so; I want to play by all the rules, though, and leave nothing to chance. FIrst I have to make my install/recovery cds.

Partition Magic also looks like it has a boot manager might be an alternative. The software also has a great reputation, so I'll probably try that first.

Here is a nice short guide for using XP to boot into linux:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php? ... otsect+lnx

The 2. paragraph for installing grub might be diffrent, if you are using a graphical installer with your distro of choice. Just take care that grub will be installed on a small boot partition (30 -50 MB).

One advantae of this solution is that you can reinstall XP without affecting the Linux partition. Just copy the boot record to c:\ again, then you are set.

@umdenken: be aware of the partition magic boot manager. It is a peace of grap and changes the MBR as well (it destroyed my hole system once). Using the XP bootmanager (see link obove) or just grub is a much better choice.
