HELP!(recovery CD message: free space too small)

#1 Post by ashat » Thu Nov 06, 2008 11:31 am

I am using the recovery CD set sent by Lenovo for my T41p
But after inserting the first disk, a message of error appears:

Error number 1828
Error: Free Space is too small

what does it mean??
the HD drive is about 60Giga

could it depends on a previous installation of Linux and its partitions table?

It actually had the following table of partitions:
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 linux
/dev/sda2 14 7296 58599697+ 8e linux LVM

and after checking with Ubuntu CD live, it results
101.94 unallocated
55.79 linux (LVM logical volume manager)

Now I have deleted with Gparted the LVM partition and the unallocated space is now the total disk.

Is there any preliminary operation I should do before to retry with the CD recovery disks?

thanks in advance for any suggestion

A.

HELP!(recovery CD message: free space too small)

I've done recovery image installation for a friend's T41 before. I have a T40 and T42. The installation for the T41 look a lot like the T40's.

You seem to have wiped out your hard disk already using Gparted. Why not try to boot from a floppy with windows 98 startup diskette using usb floppy drive, then use DOS fdisk to erase or delete the partition. Then try the recovery CD's again.

If that doesn't work, go back to the floppy using windows 98 again. This time, format the entire drive. But first use fdisk to allocate entire space of the drive.

I encountered a similar error in my T40 where the error was not enough space. I just use windows 98 startup floppy, fdisk. I cannot recall if I did a format command. But I was successful in reinstalling the factory image using the CD's.

'Hope this works. Enjoy.

Hi Danny

thanks for your reply.
I did solved it simply restarting with the first recovery CD after wiping with Gparted.

The installation went through until the first reboot from the HD.
It was still finding Grub in the MBR.

So I fixed the MBR with a recovery console XP CD I had.

Rebooting the system the installation ended successfully.
