FireGL2 vs. MR 9600 and X600

#1 Post by cameronkrazi23 » Mon Jan 10, 2005 4:59 pm

One other thing... how do the Fire GL2 128mb, MR 9600 64mb, and the X600 compare in benchmarks? I read somewhere that the FGL2 128 and the 9600 64mb were quite close in performance.

Yes, the FireGL and the 9600 are very similar in performance. The core is exactly the same for both. The big differences are the video memory - the 9600 has 64MB and the FireGL has 128MB, and the drivers each uses - the 9600 uses drivers intended for speed and gaming, and the FireGL uses drivers for stability for use with CAD programs. The X600 is a PCI express video card which you will see in the new T43s. The X600 will have better performance than both the 9600 and the FireGL.

So what is the advantage of buying the Fire GL2 card if the performance, despite having double the memory, is similar to the MR 9600?

i suppose when you do a lot of CAD work and the work that you doing requires a large graphic memoty then you would opt for Fire GL.

IIRC, you can get some drivers for the FireGL T2 that give it better Direct3D/OpenGL gaming functionality.
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...
