GPU problem and laptop stands

#1 Post by ashat » Mon Nov 10, 2008 5:55 am

After reading so much about the risk to induce the GPU problem on the T41/T42/T43 model I am wondering if one should put special attention in choosing or not-choosing a specific model of laptop stand.

For my old R40 I am using since few months this model (PortaBook),
http://www.walgreens.com/store/product. ... rod3909342

Actually I never consider a stand before, but after 5 years of use, (and getting older...) I must say that this poor plastic thing does a good job in reducing neck and wrist pain (or at least in increasing working time before to develop pain).

But now I am trying to switch to the T41p (4 years old but in good conditions) I have got, and I am really scared about the GPU problem.
So I am wondering:

is this kind of of stand safe for the T41P?
or the angle it induces between the base and the screen (the picture on the on-line shop is the position in which I use it) is too high and could put too much strees in the motherboard?

In this case is there any other model of laptop stand I should consider instead?

thanks a lot in advance,

A.

Any suggestion about the most confortable stands for my T41p?

For now I am using a portfolio style notebook under the machine, not bad to be a zero-cost solution.

I don't believe that you would be putting the system (specifically the GPU) under any significant physical stress when using a laptop stand like this. The major flexing problem that has been attributed to the GPU connection failures is more of a twisting or torquing of the base, as can happen if you pick up the laptop from one of the front corners. With the base being placed at an angle and the lid opened up a little bit more than "normal", that shouldn't stress the motherboard at all (unless the stand flexes in the center when you're typing).

I don't think it will matter much. The vulnerable TP's seem to have the problem if the motheroard is torqued like when holding by the edges. I also think it is a matter of luck as to whether yours will have the GPU problem or not.

I have had a used T42 and T40 for over 1 yr now and no GPU problems.
