T40p Fan about to give up after 5 years(Solved successfully)

#1 Post by jkirch » Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:44 am

Hello all,

my fan is making winding noises that sound really horrible.
It started 2 days ago. I already took the keyboard of and monitored it.
After following a lot of discussions about fan assemblies I am wondering what I should do. I like to keep the machine and do the swap possibly on my own.
Shouldn't be a problem to deal with the Hardware manuals and instructions since it is all well documented by IBM. The question is just what assembly to choose.
Either to go with the original T40p fan assembly or if any other fits from e.g. T41p or so this would also be fine.

Who can give me a hint and possibly a source to get the part(s)?
Any additional comments on what is needed in addition and special care?
Cheers and thanks,

Jens

P.S. I am glad that my TP 600E is still going stron :-D

I am also curious... I've been seeing lots of "long fan" mentions around this site and ebay.

Do the 15" and 14" models take different size fans? Is there a "short" model? Are there two different kinds of fans that will fit both sizes somehow?

P.S. -- My 600E is also chugging right along. (save for a failing battery) Thinkpad geeks unite! :D

I will use your topic. My T40p fan is loud and always on. Would it be better if I order new fan from lenovo?

Your best bet, for improved CPU and GPU cooling, is M10 long fan, FRU 13R2657 or "standard" long fan 13N5442. Either can be used regardless of the size (works on both 14" and 15" units), or the GPU in question. M10 is supposed to be quieter.

Hope this helps.

Hello all,

thank you for the recommendations. I have at least found a source for Germany for the long fan assembly (FRU 41W5204):
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0264772587

Now I am hesitant if I can install it. AFAIK there is already thermal paste on the new assembly. Do I need to remove any old paste and what is the best way to do this?

Thanks for any replies.
Jens

I called to Lenovo and the guy told me that standard long fan will fit in my laptop (2373-G1G) and now I'm waiting that he sends me an offer. I hope that the new fan is quieter.

jkirch: you must remove old paste and wipe cpu core with smooth cloath or handkerchief, apply new paste and put heatsink on it. And be carefull when opening the casing because it has many screws.

The fan should be accessible by only removing the keyboard and palmrest. As stated, you will have to remove the old thermalpaste. In addition to using a smooth cloth, use isopropyl alcohol to clean it. While the preapplied thermal paste will suffice, using a higher performance paste like Artic Silver 5 (or another silver or diamond compound) will result in much lower temperatures.

apply theraml paste only on the heatsink above the cpu, not on the thermal pad above the gpu
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G

Hello all,

just wanted to let you know that open heart surgery was successfully accomplished Nov 22, 2008 :-)

Thinkpad T40p is back in good health and runs like a charm.

It was really easy to do. Fortunately I had the right Torx tool for the palmrest removal.

Cheers and thanks again for the hints.
