Dead Pixel

#1 Post by ellinj » Tue Jan 11, 2005 6:51 pm

So, I just got a new 14" T42 from IBM EPP, there is a dead pixel (stuck on red) in the lower right hand corner. Should I

a) Live with it.
b) Return it for replacment hope the second is better
c) Order another and keep whichever is better.

I guess my question is how likely is it that I will get another with a dead pixel? I have owned four hp's previous to this and have never encountered a dead pixel.

I'd return it. I've got a red one in my T40's lower left hand corner and it drove me nuts if I played games. It was slighly less irritating in DVDs since it was far outside the widscreen video area.

I would have returned the machine but for the hefty restocking fee... I didn't know about this site when I bought it.

Now that I use my T40 for work only (have a perfect 17" Dell Ultrasharp panel for games and graphics) it doesn't bother me.

A lot of people will recommend that you return it. I don't get the point of that, though. On my first LCD, I had a dead pixel, but it didn't bother me at all -- the only way it would bother me was if I sought it out and looked directly at it. Otherwise I didn't even notice its presence.

I recently had my screen replaced by ThinkPad Protection, and it seems that on my new display, there're no dead pixels. However, I also consciously avoided using a dead pixel test. If I'm not looking for it, and don't know where to look for it, I'll probably never even see it.

There's something like four million pixels & sub-pixels in a 1400x1050. If all but one or two of them work, that seems to me to be well within any reasonable manufacturing tolerances.

But, that said, if you want to return it, that's your right and I'm not criticizing that. I'm just saying I personally would not do it.

if you can afford to front the money and are sure that you will have them both within the 30 day period, and you don't mind the bother/hassle of a return, then you (seriously) should go for it!

Logged into ibm epp clicked on return policy and get

"For a new IBM Machine, you may return it to IBM for any reason within 30 days of the date of invoice and obtain a refund or credit. IBM does not provide refunds or credits for portions of a packaged offering provided at a single price. You may return the complete package for a refund or credit."

ellinj,

I would order another one and keep whichever is better. Personally I had a dead pixel and it drove me nuts, I kept staring at it... staring... and continued to stare. I would also automaticly look for it when I knew it would show up.

On the other hand if it barely bothers you, then don't bother the hassle. Also if your screen is a 1400x1050 or the 1600x1200, then the bad pixel is extremely small.

You paid for IBM service, you should get IBM service if you are unsatisfied.

Ellinj,

Even i had the same issue when i purchased my 2373CXU through EPP , had a dead red pixel in the centre of the LCD.
Opened up a technical ticket with support (otherwise i would have to pay the shipping charges) , Got a new one pretty soon (a week or so) without any defects .

So i would suggest you to return it .
