LCD markings

Does anyone have permanent keyboard marks on their LCD screens? I have just started to notice a small mark caused most likely by the spacebar that's permanent and would not come off. I do not want my laptop turning into the etched screens typical of powerbooks, so I think I'm going to be using a sheet of copy paper whenever I close my Thinkpad.

It is only noticable when the LCD is off.

Paper is abrasive, so if the spacebar is pressing against the LCD, the paper probably won't help.

I suggest laying a microfiber cloth along the inside. That way, you protect your screen and also have a safe screen dustcloth available anytime you need it.

You might also try "filling in" the little grooves along the edges of the palmrest - where the display cover's ridges rest when the laptop is closed. That should give you about 1/2mm more clearance, which should be more than enough.

Our 14" T42 gets ever-so-faint keyboard marks now and then - they wipe off and I think it only happens when there's pressure applied to the LCD cover when we carry it around.

The 15" gets moved a lot more, and probably because it's so much bigger, the keyboard has never touched the display.

I often get temporary markings from some of the middle keys and the eraserhead. I guess this is where the LCD screen is the weakest and flexes the most.

But the minor marking that I have noticed is not temporary. It is permanent damage caused by abrasion.

I have seen powerbooks with really severe LCD etching caused by contact with the keyboard, and I do not want this to happen to my Thinkpad.

The reason why I want to use a sheet of copy paper is because I don't want to look all 'anal" when I whip out my laptop and have to remove a microfiber protector. A sheet of paper is more discrete. heh

I understand what you're saying. But what I'm saying is that using something as abrasive as a sheet of copy paper isn't going to help this situation - it may scratch the screen even more.

Yeah, Apple really hasn't done much to address this. Guess they really NEED to stay at 1" thick no matter what.

Heh, I hear you there; we all have our priorities. I keep a microfiber cloth on top of my laptop to protect the matte cover from my laptop sleeve, which I keep in the sleeve of my backpack. I have no problems looking anal, and in fact invite it, since it naturally makes people a little more careful about touching my screen when they're pointing something out, or putting things on top of my laptop.

Had you rather pay Upward to over a $1000 to replace the LCD or look anal. Not to mention as the other users have already said the paper will scratch the screen probably worse.

I get those marks and they wipe clean away with a soft cloth and clean water. So if your marks are permanent, you might wish to cast back and determine what caused it, because your screen may already be ruined.

How much do replacement LCDs cost anyway? I guess if the copy paper scratches it up even more, I might just think to myself then that this is the point of no return, and all of the sudden, stop caring about my LCD.

if the marks bother you when using the thinkpad, then upgrade to a newer thinkpad..
if the marks do NOT bother, forget it..

i know, we all want to keep our thinkpads in as perfect condition as possible..
but things happen..

i suggest you balance the annoyance vs. the cost..

if it were me, i would continue to use my thinkpad until it was replaced and then not let etching happen again..

in the past, these marks come about because you pack the thinkpad too tightly in a computer bag..

try a thin screen protector.. thin plastic film that goes onto the surface and protects it from such scratches..

This is actually quite clever psychology. Fortunately people usually don't touch my screen or even apologize when they do. Maybe I was just whining enough...

Does anyone in here use clear LCD film to protect their screens?

Where is the best place to get these? I have Googled, but I want to get some input.

Also, if someone can tell me if this film will affect the appearance of my screen.

check the threat with the "nushield" protection foil.
It was somewhere in this forum.
