Shut it down and go home . If you're worried about price choose a Banias."

There are no compatibility issues between theT41 and T42 machines, and you can swap all the parts between them, boards included. FYI, Intel GPU R51's will work for XGA, Intel GPU R52's will work or XGA or SXGA+.HarryC :thumbs-UP:
It means that I can buy motherboard t41/t42/t43 to my t40p? Regards, Thomas.
Yes any of those systemboards will fit, however if you get a T43 board you'll need new RAM (PC2-4200) and the CPU you'll need is a 533MHz FSB Pentium M. The CPU in a T40 and T41 is a 400MHz Pentium M. A 400MHz Pentium M CPU will actually run in a T43 board, but not at the right speed/frequency. Your best bet is to stick with a T40 or a T41 board as has been previously mentioned. In fact if you do not get a /p board, you'll most likely be downgrading your GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), so keep that in mind as well.

14 or 15" models use the same mobo, you can use any R51 motherboard. There were two Intel GPU models, one had 10/100 Ethernet and no FireWire, the other had 10/100/1000 Ethernet and FireWire. With the latter, you'll have to decide what to do about the FireWire - options include 1) disconnect the cable and not use it, or 2) fashion a port in the side of your case with a Dremel and enjoy it.underclocker :thumbs-UP:

There are seven adapter models that will work (are compatible with the T4x BIOS) for T4x machines (from IBM), they all work pretty well, but some people have preferences; I believe each adpater has more than one part number (some have several part numbers). underclocker] :thumbs-UP:

***********************Fingerprint Reader**********************
It won't work on any T40 or T41 machines.
It will only work on T42 machines that supported the feature (needs the extra chip on the mobo - biometric coprocessor).
All Intel GPU T43 mobo's support it.
Some ATI GPU T43 mobo's support it (not sure about all).
In addition to needing the palmrest (there were at least 3 part numbers for the palmrest but all seem to be interchangeable), machines that came with the feature have slightly different Ultrabay drive cages. As noted above, they have a cut-out that permits the actual fingerprint scanner to rest within, thereby permitting the palmrest to remain flat when installed.
The fingerprint scanner is cabled to the touchpad and uses the same cable/connector that connects the touchpad to the motherboard. There is no extra or new connector needed on the mobo. You can physically connect the fingerprint scanner palmrest to any T4x machine.
Every Intel GPU T43 that I've opened up has the proper Ultrabay drive cage, whether or not it was originally equipped with the fingerprint reader. This makes for a quick and clean upgrade.
However, the special Ultrabay drive cage really isn't needed. In fact, the part with the cut-out is actually the hard drive cage (which comes with the Ultrabay drive cage). You can just use snips to cut out the small 1" x 1" section just below the fingerprint reader and you'll be fine. It is literally, just a cut-out.
So unless you do not have a motherboard that supports the feature, IT DEFINITELY WILL NOT WORK! (But you can install it and pretend! After all, do those huge wings on Honda's make them go faster?!)

A 4.5amp PS is needed for the T4x, charging the battery, and powering 3 USB ports at ½ A each (2 on the T4x and one on the port replicator.) I ran across a note on the IBM web site some time ago that indicated operating a T40 series on a 56W supply may result in unstable operation when using all of the USB ports.(16v ~ 4.5A, 72W 5.5mm O.D., 2.5mm I.D.) ... eeeh, pardon me for asking, but what is really the purpose (aim) of this thread? Do you wish to make a "Parts List" like what is already available in the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p or which can be found through the ThinkPad parts list index?

Beware that there are both "pre-RoHS" parts and newer RoHS-compliant parts... and this information is important! A parts list like yours should contain such information, in addition to key specifications for the particular part (there are many different e.g. motherboards, such as with fingerprint reader, w/o etc, and with this or that GPU etc.), so your list will become very long (like is already in the HMM!), and hard to make precise.

I am still not sure that I really understand/see the purpose of this list/thread, but I would be happy to be enlightened a bit!

Thanks Johan I did not know about the Thinkpad parts list index. What a great resource, and we are even I don't see the point in your post.

My guess is that he wanted to provide direct links to ebay searches for the correct FRUs, broken down by model, version, type or whatever.

I think it's a very handy idea, assuming that the information is correct.

Pentium M 780 SL7VB (C0) 2266 MHz 2048 KiB 533 MT/s

Could someone confirm that this list of CPUs will work in a (Correction)T43?

How dead is it? Can you access it after mounting in an external usb enclosure or in an ultrabay second hard drive adapter? You might then have luck using the free utility PC Inspector File Recovery.

well I for one (if that means anything) think this link/page is really useful information!

Especially glad to see that the Pentium M 730 SL86G processor (I picked up recently from ebay for $5) will work for my (currently) non working T43 !!
:)

Thanks for compiling everything!

To be fair to Johan (who is a huge asset to this forum) the list was pretty crappy when he wrote "eeeh" I have edited it 30+ times since then.

Thanks Tom for your compilation.....I find it useful.

The IBM docs are good of course, but I sometimes find their organization a hindrance.

A 'straight line' compilation like this is the kind of thing I like for the 'first pass'.....then if I want to -verify-, I go to the original source docs.

nice job. 8)

Thanks RBS for the snark  but I just used information that was posted on this forum.
