T42 External Monitor Quality

#1 Post by huffman » Tue Nov 25, 2008 7:07 pm

I am curious about anyone's experience with using an external monitor with their T42. I have a T42 (2379-DXU) that I used to have connected to a 24" WUXGA monitor, but eventually i took the monitor back because I didn't find it to be satisfactory. That is, the picture quality just wasn't that great - it was fuzzy and the color and viewing angles weren't very good. I will say that it had a TN panel, so the latter two problems were expected, but I didn't understand why it wasn't very crisp. I know I hooked it up to another system at one point, but I can't recall whether I experience better picture quality with that setup.

So, my question is, what are your experiences with this? I want to get another LCD soon, but I'm afraid of receiving bad picture quality again because of my T42. Can anyone comment on this?

And before anyone asks, yes, I had it at native resolution.

Thanks!

You did not mention if you were driving the display docked with the DVI output, or just used the standard vga analog signal of the T42.
That could account for some of your issues with the display, you did say you drove the monitor at its native res - I am guessing 1900x1200, very important.
I have used a Samsung 220BW 22" om my T42 and its looks good connected DVI, never ran it analog.
Bottom line, you get what you pay for, especially in the 24" range, I would go to local stores that sell the displays you are interested in and see them in action, color, brightness, viewing angle, etc.
In the 24" variety, look at the SAMSUNG TOC T240 - recommended..

Thank you for your reply.

I used each output: T42 VGA, dock VGA and DVI.

I don't think I saw a huge difference in any of them. Have you ever compared the quality of your screens from when they are hooked up to your T42 versus another computer, say, a desktop?

I have numerous T42s. I find them unacceptably fuzzy using VGA at more than 1280x1024. No problem whatsoever using DVI at 1920x1200. This seems to be a T4x-related problem. My newer machines are fine over VGA.
