Second HDD adapter for ultrabay slim (power options)

#1 Post by pdudas » Thu Jan 13, 2005 7:09 am

Hi!

I need some more extra Hdd space. I have 7K60 and I want to use my original hdd.

There are two possibilites: USB rack and 2nd Hdd for Ubay slim.

Do you have any idea about the using of the 2nd hdd adapter?
I mean that can I change the power options of this device or it will use the options I have set tot the éprimary drive?

Can I switch off this drive without removing (I dont want to enable/disable the IDE controller of the Ubay slim) for power saving? Can I use the Safe hardvare removing and then stop the HDD?

Will this working after a shutdown, suspend,hibernate? (I hope suspend and hibernate will not detect the HDD again as my CDRW/DVD drive do).

I want to hold the drive in the Thinkpad, but I dont want to use it all the time!

Thanks!

I just got my 7K60 last week and yesterday I recieved an external firewire/usb2.0 enclosure for the old 30gb drive. The reason I got an external one is so that its not limited to my TP and if I wanted to transfer files to other computers, I can just plug in the USB cable. The brand is Mapower and the drive is VERY secure in this thing. If you dont need firewire, the Vantec Nexstar is about half and as thin and half as expensive but not as well made.

I dont know if its the particular drive I got but here are some things ive noticed after playing with it for an hour. My laptop recognizes it as the Genesys 711 chipset, not the Oxford 911 like one of the reviews said. The other thing is that I need to plug in the USB cables to power the firewire. Its kind of a hassle to plug in both usb ports and the firewire cable if you want to use this thing. Oh yeah, it doesnt come with an external 5v DC adapter but it is option.

As far as your OS supports that. Short, yes.
Can I switch off this drive without removing (I dont want to enable/disable the IDE controller of the Ubay slim) for power saving? Can I use the Safe hardvare removing and then stop the HDD?
Yes, old common way, or with FN-F9 with a nice IBM-Tool

Ok after shutdown the drive is detected again of course. After hibernation or susped will stay in the old mode.

Ok, use the 2nd Hdd option
-> lighter than usb-solutions
-> no cable
-> no, oops i lift my tp and the 2nd drive swings on its cable
-> I often travel with 3 of them, for 3 usb-solutions I would need a 2nd bag
