Any hope for 14" Flexview soon?

#1 Post by aghusker » Fri Jun 04, 2004 8:09 pm

Are there any rumors or hope for a 14" Flexview model to emerge in the next few months?

I will be buying in a couple of months.
14" size is ideal, but I think the 15" Flexview may be worth it.

There's no hope for the current generation (T42). IBM wouldn't change screen options during the middle of a product cycle. Even if there was a 14" FlexView, it would mean a thicker and heavier notebook.

That's an error on the IBM website. The 14.1" SXGA+ is not FlexView.

The problem is nobody manufacturs a 14" Flexview-type display. ID-Tech, which is half owned by IBM, just recently developed the 15" Flexview models used in the T42 and R50s. But as far as anyone can tell ID-Tech has given up on 14" development altogether. IBM used to use ID-Tech 14.1" SXGA+ displays in the T40s and some T41s, but ID-Tech stopped making them as of March 30, and now IBM instead buys 14.1" LCDs from Samsung. The only real possibility is Fujitsu, who now makes a 13" XGA "Crystal View" display (uses MVA which is generally a bit better than IPS). They could perhaps decide to scale up to a 14", but I would not hold my breath.

I would not be surprised, actually, if the T50 does not even come in 14.1".

I got the 15" T42 for the Flexview. Although I love the 14.1" size, it was worth it to get the slighty large size to ge the huge upgrade in screen quaility. (IMHO)

Actually 13.3" is perfect size for XGA (IMHO). I wish IBM would scale up X series or scale down T series to implement this "Crystal View" panel. That would definitely be my next laptop...

Ooooo...a CrystalView/Flexview X series! I'd put in my order in for that right now.

I'd go for a CrystalView 14.1" SXGA+ display. I prefer the small form factor 14.1" T4x, but at the same time I'd like a display that doesn't look like it's from the T23 era!

I've compared my XGA panel to my friend's XGA panel on his T23. Viewing angles and brightness are exactly the same. Color is better on mine though, and doesn't have a yellowish tint to it.
