Bought My First Thinkpad Today!
Hello all, i've bought my first Thinkpad today (a t43) from a fellow forum member. I see that there are some specific issues/perks to this machine for example: Problems with upgrading to non-IBM HD.
Are there any things that i should know as a first time user?
Also, where do i get detailed system specs? What about instructions on how to upgrade/replace parts?
Are there any resources for us like ifixit.com or everymac.com has for macs?

Relax and enjoy that T43. The only thing you may want to do is upgrade the RAM to 2GB...as for the specs:
Product: ThinkPad T43 2687-DTU [change]
Operating system: All [change]
Original description: P M 750(1.8GHz), 512MB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HDD, 15in 1400x1050 LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon X300, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless(MPCI), Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint Reader, 9c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
ThinkPads are very user-friendly in general, and whenever in doubt...just ask the forum.

Congratulations with your new ThinkPad!!CRAZYBUBBA wrote:Are there any things that i should know as a first time user?

As a new user, you should browse the various FAQ's at the top of this forum: ** HOW TOs & FAQs **
As to where to find documentation, you've already had a link to the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual), above - get that! Also, you might want to know the Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad T43 2687-DTU (found by simply going to www.ibm.com and entering "2687-DTU" in the upper, right "Search"-field, and choosing the first hit). Dive into those links and you will discover e.g. the System service parts - ThinkPad T43, T43p and the Movies on hardware removal and installation - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p etc. etc.
A few hints: Get yourself a set of the Rescue & Recovery media (I see that you are already looking for that on the Marketplace) and once you have your T43 up and running I suggest you review the thread High GPU and CPU temps, TPM issues and other stuff on T43p and follow the links therein. I am confident that you will want to know that there are two highly appreciated tools which may be used to quiet the fan and extend the battery time: The "Notebook Hardware Control" program and the "ThinkPad Fan Control" made by forum-member Shimodax - see the sticky ***LINK to TP Fan Control Utility***.
Resources for Thinkpad's? Yes - forum.thinkpads.com!
Update: If you need suggestions for SW to be installed on your new T43, then see Thinkpad for my parents!
