T42 - Access Connections Problem/Wireless Problem ?

#1 Post by jagx007 » Fri Jan 14, 2005 2:18 am

I have a relatively new t42 2373 - 3VU.
I have a problem with wireless. It disconnects numerous times
and reconnects. And every so often I get a limited or no wireless connection message.

I have upgraded all my drivers and firmware, including the router.

I have this problem at various wireless location.

Any suggestions ?

make sure that EITHER Access Connections (preferred) or Windows (not BOTH) is managing your wireless connection....

What kind of WiFi router are you using? Some router chipsets have problems with atheros chipsets in the a/b/g cards.

The best way to diagnose this is the following:

1. Reset your router to factory settings and no encryption or MAC address filtering. See if you can authenticate that way.

2. Try WEP encryption only and see if you can authenticate.

3. Try MAC Address filtering only and see if you can authenticate.

4. If those work try WPA-PSK and see if you can authenticate.

Depending on where you have problems, maybe some participants in this forum can offer suggestions.

Only IBM Access Connections is managing the wireless.

At home I have the Linksys BEFW11S4 and the Netgear MR814 (which I got as a gift at Christmas.

I never have both running at the sametime. I only opened to Netgear one on see if I have the same problem, and I do.

I have reset to factory settings numerous times.

And I can authenticate in all the scenarios mentioned.

I have also reformatted my HD many times. And still the same problem.

And sometimes the ethernet stops working (when I am not using wireless)...so I have to unplug and replug the ethernet cable to the laptop.

Any suggestions ? ! Please help !

A few suggestions here that may help with the limited connectivity.

Seems like a very strange problem - especially if you've had the mother board replaced.

Could it be a TCP/IP issue - are you using DHCP - try switching to a static IP for test purposes.

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Rob.

You say you have a problem of intermittent wireless connection wherever you go. Do you have an Intel wireless card (centrino)? If so, what model and driver version please. I had that problem with an Intel 2100 wireless NIC and I ditched it in favour of the IBM 11/a/b/g card.

You say at home you also had a problem with intermittent wired connection. I had that problem (wired and wireless) recently after upgrading the firmware in my router. I contacted the router manufacturer and got new firmware that resolved the problem.

Do you have intermittent wired connection problems wherever you go? I wasn't sure. In that case, I don't know but I would call IBM service.
