T42p makes noise on TFT/screen

#1 Post by floeff » Fri Jan 14, 2005 9:49 am

Hello fellow community,

I have my second T42p 2373-W6M and even with the exchange, I experience an annoying problem: in some circumstances, I have an annoying sound from within the screen. I can easily reproduce it when working in a terminal session. The background is black, the text is greay. When the text scrolls too fast from down to up, I can clearly hear a "tickling" noise from the lower left part of the case, where my left hand resides when not typing.

The noise is there in Windows and Linux, but only when the full 1600x1200 resolution is being used.

Anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks
floeff

Could it be the graphics card? My T42p makes similar noises for example when I drag an open window around or scroll down really fast or rotate objects in CAD programs.
I don't think it's a problem. I quite like the fact that I can hear my FireGL being super fast. :D
But maybe it's not supposed to do that?

yep, I have the same symptoms on a T40p, T23 and T20.
It is only sometimes, when large graphics are moved and only when the office is totally silent.
I think it is the graphics card's high frequency/high voltage lines. Electronics usually makes noise (transformers, signal lines, etc.), which is vibration in transformer, inducer lines etc. When you check the motherboard you see a lot of transceivers. The background displays work with high voltage.

Actually, you usually hear the high frequency of CRT TVs (15 khz) or transformers (50/60Hz) as well. It is just vibration of the wires.

That indeed makes sense. Maybe my ears are just too touchy. :-)

Yeah, as far as I can tell that's the graphics card. It happen whenever you do anything graphically intensive (and this includes simply dragging an itunes scrollbar).

It can be very noticeable when it's quiet, but I don't think it's a flaw...
