SYSTEM STANDBY NOT WORKING

#1 Post by jordi32 » Fri Jan 14, 2005 10:39 pm

I have a T42p and I have a customized power setting in which the monitor turns off after 20 minutes and the system is supposed to go on standby after 60 minutes. The monitor does turn off after its set time but the system does not go on standby. What may be wrong???

I changed the setting to go on standby after only one minute and then it did go on standby.

Please help.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Jordi

My Guess....

My guess is that there is some process that is interrupting the computer from going into standby - something that perhaps regularly interrogates and "wakes up" or resets the countdown to standby. That would explain why it works when the standby time is set to one minute vs. 60 - for example if the event that resets the standby countdown occurs every 5 or 10 minutes, you'd be able to go into standby most of the time when standby mode is set below that interval, but never if standby mode is set above the interval. This is all just theory - I'm no Thinkpad expert (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express).

I am having a similar problem - my TPad goes into screensaver mode only if it is set to something below 10 minutes, and never goes into standby mode (set for 25 minutes). When it is in screensaver mode, it "wakes up" within a few minutes without any keyboard/mouse prompts. I'm suspecting my firewall (Sygate Personal Firewall), but I have the exact same software setup on my Desktop (Dell Optiplex 270) and the screensaver works fine.

In short, I'd investigate the installed software, especially firewalls, antiviruses, networking, software update utilities, and certainly check the schedule (Control Panel -> Performance & Maintenance -> Scheduled Tasks). And I'd love to hear from anyone else on this topic, since we are having similar problems.

Standby

#3 Post by worsant » Sat Jan 15, 2005 2:13 pm

I have a similar problem with standby, but alas no answer.
Using XP Pro, when I go on standby it tells me that the device driver..... is stopping machine going on standby, either quit applications orupdate drivers.

Problem is if I quit the application it tells me that another device driver is stopping going on standby. I have disabled three of these now (mainly keyboard and mouse drivers but stll the problem remains.
Before I go disable everything the question occurred to me, shouldn't standby work with these drivers anyway as they are standard?

Anyone got any ideas?

Standby

I'm not sure if this is specifically what is causing your problem but if you happen to have a old version of ATM (4.0) installed the system won't go into standby. This is installed by some older Adobe Photo applications. This Microsoft article describes the problem in more detail and the fix.

The fix is simply to remove ATM 4.0 using Add/Remove programs. Hope this helps...Bob
