T40 POP Problem

#1 Post by ninjackn » Fri Dec 12, 2008 1:04 pm

My friends old T40 started had a fan problem. It drove him nuts and he wanted to throw it away but I saved it from the garbage bin.

I am no inclined to direct it in the same direction.

My problem is that it has a power on password that won't go away. There is no HD password or supervisor password, just the power on. In fact I know what the password is and it doesn't work.

I should be able to disable the POP in the BIOS just by pushing the ThinkAccess button or F1 during start up to gain access to the bios, it doesn't do that. The little message at the bottom disappears and then it displays the entering BIOS for a while and then continues on it's merry way to prompt for a power on password.

I then directed my attention to the maintenance manual which says that the POP can be removed by disconnecting the power, the main batter and the cmos battery. I did all that an the POP remains. I did it a couple times and have left it alone for a few days. I turned it on only to be greeted by that stupid little icon.

I browsed the forums and then the net and couldn't find any other solution. Does anybody have any further suggestions?

Pull the hard disk out. Some disk failures act like the disk is pasword protected.

Did you change the POP to nothing, i.e. just press Enter when asked for a new password?
Did you then disable the POP setting in the BIOS after the change?

Just in case, make a note of the current password in case you need it again later (or sell it...).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
