T41 - loose GPU syndrome

#1 Post by electrizer » Fri Dec 19, 2008 3:59 am

Hi all!

I was just wondering if you could help with this notorious problem of T41. The screen freezes (often and ofter recently) when I lift the machine, move it around.

Is there a cure for it? Is it possible to solder the GPU, to repair it somehow, or is the only remedy to buy a new motherboard?

Anyway, I want to sell it because I got myself a T60. For anyone interested the specs are:

- Pentium 1600 Mhz
- 1256 MB RAM
- 80 GB HDD
- optical drive (CD-RW/DVD)
and the rest of the usual stuff...

The condition is Good+ There are some scratches on the case but nothing major, normal war and tear. No cracks, dents, screen in perfect condition, no dead pixels. Laptop looked after at all times, always stored and carried around in a case.

PM me should you be interested :)

Thanks and Merry Christmas!!!!
Przemek

There's two "sticky" threads at the top of this T4x conference:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=57021
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=65505

The first discusses reflowing the solder balls on the GPU to effect a repair. The other thread talks about using a motherboard from an R51 (which has a totally different graphics chip) as a replacement for the T4x motherboard. Besides these two methods, there's always a swap with the same T4x motherboard to consider.

If you'd rather sell your T41, then your best bet would be to post a FS (For Sale) message in the Marketplace conference.

If of interest you should know that there are a few places (at least!) in Europe offering fixes to the "loose GPU" problen in T4x ThinkPads; see Providers to fix GPU problems in Europe.
