T43 Backspace key lowers volume, random mouse clicks...

#1 Post by speede541 » Sat Dec 20, 2008 11:12 am

I've got a used T43p that exhibits odd behavior.

- 'Backspace' cause the volume to lower, same as pressing the volume down key.

- Raising the volume using the 'VOL UP' key sometimes causes the browser to go Back a page.

- I frequently get random mouse clicks while use the mouse pad.

- There is an annoying "auto fill in" selection bug I can't get around. If I begin to type a name into YouTube or Google's search boxes (for instance), when I hit the space bar after the first word, it auto completes my selection (example: I begin typing "jet engine" but after "jet" and hitting the space bar, "Jet Li movie star" appears in my search box).

I bought the computer used from a guy who refurbs them. Within days, Windows XP Pro wanted me to activate. My XP Pro serial number on the label on the bottom came up invalid. I called Microsoft tech support, explained the situation, and they gave me a code to work around this and register.

As a precaution, I ordered a set of restore discs for this particular model. I want to restore the drive & OS to "like new" conditions as a precaution, just to make sure there is nothing malicious installed by the guy I bought it from.

Are these symptoms I've described consistant with loading the wrong image? Hardware failure? Something more sinister? Or easily correctable?

The auto-complete things are probably options set, that will be corrected if you recover factory software. It may be that you have the touchpad sensitivity too high. Also, some people don't like "tap-to-click", in which tapping (brushing) the touchpad acts like a click. Backspace = Volume-down might be the keyboard, but I would reinstall the OS first.

Your keyboard could need replacing. If you have another to try I would.

Thanks, fellas.

Still waiting on the recovery CDs to arrive, but my fingers are crossed it's not the keyboard.

Keyboards are easy (and quite cheap) to replace.

Couldn't the ThinkVantage Keyboard Customizer be
causing the backspace/volume control issue? A previous
owner might have set them that way, for some personal
reason.

AutoFill: does it happen in different browsers? (For example,
I use FireFox but still have MSIE on my system and use it to
check oddities like this.)

Mouse clicks: I tend to agree with RichK; I sometimes do this
myself by accidentally brushing the touchpad or resting my
palm on it.

Hope something here helps...
